    11.04 hangs on reboot/shutdown

    Hi,
    I have 11.04 as a result of upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 -> 11.04.
Since I made an upgrade, I can only switch off my laptop with Power button. It hangs during shutdown at the blue screen with Kubuntu logo and 5 blinking dots. If I press Esc at that screen, I see message like "All processes were ended in 2 seconds" (cannot guarantee I remember it 100% correct).
I checked syslog, dmesg and found nothing strange.
Here is extract of last messages from syslog:
    Code:

Found message http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3116656.0, it is very close but not the same - my laptop hangs during reboot and shutdown.

Same situation on same laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 which is fresh install.

    Hardware: Compaq C300

I don't even know what to check, so any advice is welcome.

    Re: 11.04 hangs on reboot/shutdown

I am assuming that in doing the upgrade you have taken a few leaps in your version of KDE. Conflict can arise when that happens.

In that case if you navigate in your home directory to the hidden folder .kde/share/config (or something like that as I'm at a win box right now) and rename it (possibly with the suffix old). Don't delete it. In case you are not aware within dolphin select view/show hidden files to show the .kde folder.

Either reboot or logout and back in again. Your desktop and KDE applications will have been reset to their defaults. That may well solve the shutdown problem. When you are satisfied that everything is up and running as it should be you can then remove the old config folder.

    HTH

      Re: 11.04 hangs on reboot/shutdown

      Hi,
As I mentioned above, I made fresh Ubuntu 11.05 install and it has same problem. This means that's not KDE problem.
I think I found the reason actually. I tried and it worked fine. I need some more tests to confirm my guess.
It is that cifs filesystem is unmounted after wifi switch off, and creates delay.

Although, I'll follow your advice about .kde in another issue I have. This is to do with desktop effects. When I boot my laptop, a message appears that they have been disabled and that I can override this with checkbox in desktop effects configuration. Making this puts my processor load to 100% and computer is absolutely unresponsible.
Hope, .kde can solve the issue unless you have another adivise how to solve this. I found several topics here and there discussing similar behaviour, but nothing promising so far.

        Re: 11.04 hangs on reboot/shutdown

I assume you are overriding the functionality check? I assume your machine has the intel GMA950? Mine has the 915 and with the functionality check disabled desktop effects work fine.

What process is using up all the CPU? I have known xorg to run away following an upgrade of KDE and for the steps I suggested to fix it. Other than that, I've not got any idea.

        Edit:

Just noticed this is my 2000th post. Must get a day job

            Re: 11.04 hangs on reboot/shutdown

OK, continuing on long reboot issue.
The file similar to one mentioned at http://www.madanalogy.com/2008/04/fi...with-cifs.html already exists in /etc/init.d with name umountnfs.sh
It is executable and owned by root.
There are links to this file in /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d. As far as I understand, this script should be executed during reboot.
I added couple of own lines in the script file to check whether it is actually executed (create a file in /tmp and put a string in this file). Unfortunately, this does not happen during the reboot, no file was created.
Reboot itself takes ~5 minutes. If I do umount /myshare before reboot, it takes couple of seconds.
How can I check why the script is not executed? Any other suggestions?

update: script actually is called up. but it hangs during umount. see second page of thread.

I've had the same problem since 10.10 and maybe 10.04 (cannot remember that far back!).

I was hoping that a fresh install of 11.04 might solve the problem but it hasn't.

Found message http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3116656.0, it is very close but not the same - my laptop hangs during reboot and shutdown.

Same situation on same laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 which is fresh install.

              Hardware: Compaq C300

I don't even know what to check, so any advice is welcome.

does manually running shutdown change its behavor at all ?
                use
sudo shutdown -h now (or -P now or -r now)

If I come back to this my post http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...2395#msg262395 , then my question would be: why does not Ubuntu execute script which is in /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d during reboot/shutdown?

                          Hi darkduck.

I've been in the same position ever since I installed 10.04. I filed a bug on very much the same subject in June of last year. I'm convinced that decisions such as moving to "upstart" and various other development decisions has (not deliberately) conspired to make older hardware less acceptable.

When I moved from 8.04 to 9.10, I had no problems, although looking at logs would show an occasional complaint about the age of the BIOS and using APM. In 8.04, oddly enough, I did have some hanging problems on shutdown that were fixed with some APM setting on bootup scripts. Almost like some sort of "bit rot". Now in 10.04 all I can do is shutdown and then hit the power button on my laptop. So it goes. 10.04 is still a great distro and functions really well on my old hardware, despite the inconvenience of not shutting down to a powered off state.

And yes, I have done all the tricks at the command line with halt and various shutdown parameters. It's my old laptop, and its old hardware, and its old BIOS.

I also have trouble shutting down my system, but not exactly the same issue.
I am using a desktop computer, with a 64-bit AMD-processor, and a lot of other uninteresting hardware (I suppose).

When I try the "shut down" button on the K-menu, my screen "fades" with my desktop background visible through a transparent "foreground", and a new button pops up asking me to shut down, and seconds count down from 30, I think (which is all normal behaviour). If I click the button, the button disappears, the transparency remains, and nothing else happens. The system is still responding to everything, the K-menu works, I can open and close any program that I want to, but the transparency still remains.

What I have done this far:
                            - Opened konsole
                            - ps x
                            - Got a list that looks something like this:

                            - killed the process manually without trying to shut down first: Everything closed (apparently), and I got the bootup-login-screen, asking for my password (typing that, I got logged in as usual, and everything was as normal).

Now what? It seems to me that some process or script or whatever does not terminate when the TERM-signal is sent from whatever sends the TERM-signal (KDE, I assume), and that KDE just keeps waiting for all processes to terminate, resulting in nothing happens.

                            I have also tried:
                            - "sudo su -"
                            - "shutdown -h now (a lot of rubbish)"
This shuts down the system immediately.

I have not tried "halt", I am not familiar with that command (don't know what it is supposed to do).

I fixed my slow shutdown with the conf herehttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1760749
It should umount when network is going down, and thus prevent the hang. It works for 10.10 but fails on 11.04, tried it yesterday. Any ideas how to improve it so it works on natty too.
                              Code:
                              sleep 2
semms to be vital for unmounting to work...
