    uh oh

Ok well I was upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 and in the middle of it my power went out for a second and my computer reset. After that none of my usb devices worked, my sound was out and my old ps2 mouse was all i could use when in anything but terminal. Adept and Kpackagekit crashed the second i opened them so after a while of trying i booted directly to terminal and tried all the command lines to finish the upgrade and kept getting too many errors and wouldnt complete. Finally i went to my windblows computer and downloaded 11.04 and burned it to cd and installed thinking it would just do an upgrade but now I cant get to any of my old files at all. Am i just out of luck or is there a way to get to my files?

You're screwed, I think. It sounds like the install reformatted the partition.

      Hi...

      Welcome to the forums

Someone else on the forum might have better advice but you could try the advice given on this page. Bear in mind, however, that the page is from 2003, so I'm not sure if the commands offered are still valid for the most recent versions of Linux. Another (older) help page can be found here. Or, if you would like to search other possible solutions, you can go through the search results I found in Google after typing in "repairing a Linux filesystem."

If it turns out you are unable to recover your files by repairing the OS (and will need to completely reinstall from scratch,) you can use software like the one listed here to extract them.

      Hope this helps...

        That is a bummer.

I would try and see if your /home data is still there using the (a) live cd.

If so get yourself the latest partedmagic live cd:
        http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads

there you also find a link on how to use gparted (partitioning app):
        http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=using_gparted

Depending on your HD size set up a new partition /data and move your /home/data to that new partition.

while you are at it you may want to set up a separate /home partition. This is always advisable for reasons you are just experiencing

Then use the live cd to install your OS and make sure you use the manual partitioning option wen you get to that part of the install procedure.
Set your new /home partition to /home
Set your Linux partition to / (root)
And set your data partition to /data
