    unable to login

Installed kbuntu 11.04 into a partition (sda7) and wrote grub to mbr. Other partitions have win 7, mint 10, and regular 11.04 (beta-2 with current updates). My 11.04 ubuntu root is ext4 in sda8 with a btrfs /home in sda9. I formatted sda7 btrfs as root and mounted sda9 as /home without formatting.
The login screen comes up, I enter my user name and password and a white rectangle appears (about 1/3 screen on left) for about 2-3 seconds and then I am back at the login window. I tried a few things and found I could login successfully to a console window. Clearly the password was okay, and in fact, I can do a startx from that console window and what appears to be a usable kde session comes up - I can launch the browser, and search the web etc. Of course, when I log off, I am back in the console window. The warning prior to starting a console window seemed to indicate that it would terminate in 40 seconds without activity, but that doesn't seem to happen. Looking at dmesg the only thing that looks stange is [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id.

Since some other things like update-grub didn't work, I thought maybe I had a bad download, but that sha5sum stuff checked (which I kind of expected since I downloaded with torrent). So, I decided to reinstall into the same location (sda7). Prior to installing I ran the disk check and memory tests which all passed. I then went ahead and reinstalled, but got the same results - can't login from the kde login window. Note that all my other partitions are still okay and I can access my home directory which has all of the documents and stuff available.

Anybody have a pointer as to what to do next?

      Re: unable to login

      1. I made an assumption, since nothing in the install gave any warning about my choice, that I could install and boot from a btrfs / partition as long as I installed grub to the mbr.

      2. If I boot recovery I get, eventually, to the Recovery menu Window. Choosing failsafex from the Recovery menu ends up with the console scrolling (very fast) repeated lines of
      < EE FBDEV(0) FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument >
and then back to the Recovery Menu window.
The < and > were not in the repeated lines.

      3. When grub comes up I get a warning about 'a sparse file' but it goes ahead and boots whether I press any key or not. This behavior was also present in the first install.
