    Logout fails to complete (improved)

    Hello
When I request a logout, the screen(s) go black & stay that way until I reboot.
In what is probably unrelated, I also have the monitor settings problem mentioned elsewhere.

OK - after I updated grub and set the default kernel the system will logout correctly. The question now -
is this coincidental? I cannot think of any reason this should be true!
But hey! - it works now.

Re: Logout fails to complete (improved)

I see that the last post for this message was on May 4th. I am experiencing this same problem. I have JUST installed Kubuntu 11.4. I am a linux newbie and so don't know much but I'm pretty sure that I'm not supposed to have a black screen with a mouse pointer when I choose the log out option. The only thing that I'm able to do is to restart the computer.

    Any help would be appreciated.

We need some information about your video setup. What's the make/model of your video card? lspci in a terminal will tell you this information. What driver are you using? Proprietary?

Hope this isn't too much information - this is the output of the lspci command.

I suspect that the driver is proprietary. It was installed by default when I installed the OS. I have not changed anything.

            1) Did you do a clean install of 11.04 or an upgrade?
            2) Is your system up-to-date? Run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade in Konsole and reboot.
            3) When you get the blank screen with the mouse pointer, are you able to press esc and get any error messages?
            4) Please post the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

              Meaning, type:
              Code:
              cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep [EE]
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Yikes! This looks like an "...everything you needed to know and were afraid to ask..." kind of output.

Thanks again for any assistance anyone can provide.

                      1) This was a new, clean install.
                      2) My system is up-to-date. I did run the commands you directed and this is what I got back;
                      Code:
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
                      3) I'll check this and let you know.

Re: Logout fails to complete (improved)

Once I get the blank screen, other than being able to move the mouse pointer, the computer appears to be completely unresponsive. I've tried esc, ctrl+z, ctrl+x, ctrl+b.

OK. Sorry to say it but I think you need to file a bug report. I cannot find a problem similar to yours on the net and I'm not seeing any red flags in the information you've provided.

                          Best of luck.

Myklawk, your problem seems similar to the one that I had, the very problem that brought me to this forum in search of an answer several months ago. I've just removed the fix that I put in, rebooted, logged in/out and I also see a blank screen when logging out. The mouse pointer is movable at first then it freezes. At first I can select a tty with Ctrl-Alt-F1 or similar but after a while that becomes impossible. As I also have an ATI graphics card our problems may be related.

The fix that I found on the net and I think also on this forum too was to edit the file /etc/kd4e/kdm/kdmrc. There is a line that is by default commented out in the [X-:*-Core] section and that is TerminateServer=true. If it is commented out remove the # sign at the beginning of the line. If that line is missing, it can get deleted when you change settings, then add it. Reboot and try logging out. It worked for me and after several weeks of searching I found no other fix.

I have to add that fix everytime I install Kubuntu so I know that this is the fix that fixes my problem and that re-installation will not solve anything.

                            Hope it works for you.

...and there was much rejoicing in the kingdom...!

PaulW2U; thank you so much for providing the solution to my frustrating problem. You'd think that this is something that could be fixed in a patch. In any event, now that I have a solution I'll bookmark this page so that if I need to fix something by reinstalling, I can fix this as well. ;-)
