[SOLVED] Freezes, black screen after login

Ok, here is my problem. Installed kubuntu 11.04 (64 bit) but after installation finished correctly I cannot get into kde desktop. The screen freezes, usually goes black, after entering username and password. Btw, I encountered this a week or so back when I tried to install Arch that also uses latest KDE.

The funny thing is that I can try Kubuntu 11.04 on USB without any problems.

My laptop has ATI graphics (Radeon HD 3200 Graphics) not Nvidia which seems to have more problems with the latest release. I am attaching a copy of a file xsession errors if it contains some clues what is happening.

If somebody has a suggestion what to do I would be grateful.

    Regards,

    Odisej

BTW: There are also some problems with installer. It crashed on me at the manual partitioning and goes into KDE desktop after which I can install it correctly. Also, when setting the time regions are missing... There is no Croatian Time for example but simply serbian time for the whole region. The time, of course, is the same but all version up to now correctly identified countries.

Can you better give us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

      Thank you for replying.

Unfortunately not. I went back to 10.10, I only saved the file attached. If at a later time I do try to install again I will post the other file. If the problem persists, of course.

Just wanted to report - for any future reference - that this time I did an upgrade not a fresh install and I was able to get into KDE in Natty.

My wild guess would be that since I was and I am using the proprietary ATI drivers (which were in use in 10.10 and were upgraded) I did not encounter the login problem again. As said, this is just a wild guess.

properitary driver + version upgrade almost always fails , next time just deactive teh properiatary driver before you update. then you have better chance at success when upgrading . i just did mine w/ the properitary driver installed and it got a terminal on reboot and had to fix my video the "hard" way.

There's a Grub2 thread somewhere that tells how to change this. i can't remember exactly where it is -- try starting at

            https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

Grub 1.99 (the current Natty version) allows you to put any background image in /boot/grub and that will be the background for Grub2

            (you have to do a

            sudo update-grub

            first).

You could always place an all-white image in that folder.

I found a cool Plasma globe image which I use. Since Plymouth doesn't work for any of my computers, the image is cool.

Make sure the image is the same size (resolution) as your screen, such as 1024x768), otherwise it will look ugly.

and the latest in technology such as two-way radios and e-mail.

Interesting. Well, as said, the clean install did not work for me while an upgrade did. I will mark this thread solved.
