    graphic brightness bar (again)

    Hi all,
I hoped that with the stable release this problem going to fix, instead nothing
The problem is the same that I spoke about in another post in the Pre Release forum that I paste here:
    Hi all,
I'm using kubuntu 11.04 and there is a thing that
I don't know how to resolv.
In kubuntu 10.10 the graphic bar of brightness
worked well; if I pressed Fn + +/-, the brightness
increased/decreased with the bar. Now, with kubuntu 11.04 (and other distribution with the
new KDE, I think), the brightness increased/
decreased but not the bar that even doesn't
    appear.
Any suggestion? Thank you very much to a
To this problem, I've noticed that pressed the Power button (the same to start the PC), kubuntu freeze...I cannot do anithing and the only possibility is shutdown the laptop removing the battery...

    Any suggestion?

Thank you very much to everybody

As I replied in that other post, the loss of the bar-graph you used to see when dimming/brighening the monitor is no more. The devs obviously decided it wasn't necessary, so left it out. As long as the control works, be happy.

Please don't mix problems in one post, as it muddies the waters. If you have an issue with the power button, open a separate thread for it.

Before start, sorry for my dirty english!
So...the problem insn't that the bar never appear, but that sometimes appear casually while I increase/decrease brightness and sometimes it never appear! And i should it works because it's a good idea so there's some kde problem, did you agree?
      Thank you for your answer!

I don't think the developers took out the brightness bar because it's worked perfectly for me in this release since the beta. The bar is supposed to appear when changing brightness.

Well, it used to here in my Natty, early in the Alpha/Beta stage. At some point it stopped appearing. I just chalked it up to a developer decission. The functions work - dim/brighten - so I don't worry about it.

It is also possible that changing to a different Desktop Theme might bring it back.

That's possible. I'm still using a modified version of the Air theme. But I've used quite a few others the past few days (I was bored haha) and the bar was still there. Although, it does get screwed up looking (it's like, cut off at the bottom and right hand side) if the desktop effects are turned off and on but it goes back to normal when I restart.

Speaking of desktop effects. It may be a result of Direct Rendering. I don't why but my computer (at least in the past) has always shown graphic flaws when using Direct Rendering. However this release has been the only one for me that i CAN use Direct Rendering and not have a problem at all.

The problem isn't caused from a different Desktop Theme...I tried a lot of different themes and with every theme the problem persist.

It isn't important this graph-bar but I'd like to work fine, that all

                Hi,
same sort of issues here :

Brightness controls. Seems like there are two or three separate issues (on my laptop at least, NVidia GeForce 3600M).
                - the Fn+F4/F5 shortcuts don't work, but Fn+F2/9/10/11 (at least) are working
                - the brightness control function doesn't work. By reassigning Brightness Up/Down to other shortcuts, brightness control bar appear but no noticeable change of the brightness. Same when clicking on power management tray icon, can tune the brightness bar up and down but no change in display.
                - brightness control bar appearing for one or two seconds at random moments, sometimes increasing/decreasing, following for a moment the touchpad move (but no change in display)

                After a search :
                - some have that issue fixed by upgrading to next kernel 2.6.39, but this is not in repositories yet.
                - I tried installing nvclock (supposed to be the pkg responsible for this control), no change.

Freeze issue on pressing power button :
Same issue, also seen elsewhere. Screen freeze for some 30 sec before the freeze stops, and can get to shutdown screen / shutdown.

There are also launchpad bugs on similar issues.
I think I'll wait next kernel to see if it gets resolved (instead of spending more hours on it).

                  Re: graphic brightness bar (again)

The thing is exactly that the dim/brighten function doesn't work. I don't care about the bar.
Be it through hotkeys or the brightness bar in Power Management applet, no change.

I'm following the debugging page here : https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight

I have values in /sys/class/backlight/ -- actually just a link to the folder ../../devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0, and in it are all the values needed (max_brightness, brightness, actual_brightness, etc.).
The file/value 'actual_brightness' varies from 0 to 7 when I adjust the brightness bar through the Power Management applet, but my screen appear to be at full brightness all the time.

I've tried setting acpi_backlight=vendor in the kernel boot parameters, but it removes all values and no other driver makes it work. I've tried as well acpi.brightness_switch_enabled=0, no difference.

NB: I can actually change the brightness through the NVidia X Server Settings, but this is more screen calibration and the outcome doesn't look too good.

Update : following Snowhog help on <a href="http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...44.0">this</a> topic, I can set brightness with smartdimmer through command line and it works. Handy! How to wire it to the hotkeys now ...
