Give it time. A journey of a 1,000 miles begins with the first steps. And, never feed the horse the whole haystack at once.

No such thing as a stupid question. Stupid answers? Sometimes.

o make sure: Is it simply enough if I drag and drop my Home Folder Files (without the Pictures, Documents, etc) and my File System Files onto my Ext HD to have a full back-up off all my programs, settings, fonts, etc?
Dragging and dropping folders is a fine way to back up data in them. at least that's how I do it. Settings, fonts, etc. are usually not in those folders. When you first run a program it usually sets up its configuration file(s) in your home account in a folder which is named using a "." as the first character. Folders named the first character being a "." is a "hidden" folder. Dolphin won't show them unless you check the box "View hidden files" under the View menu option. You can see them in a Konsole by issuing
    vdir -a
and you can scroll the listing using "less"
    vdir -a | less
where the vertical bar (found on the shift position of the key with the left leaning slash) is the pipe, pipping the output of "vdir -a" into the less command, which allows you to use the up and down arrows, or the page up and page down, to scroll the list.

If you want to save your configuration files you'll want to save the hidden files under your home account. Generally, however, that isn't necessary since if the hidden account isn't present the program usually creates it when it first runs. If it has been modified you may want to save it.

And if I do a full reinstall from a CD then I would just drag and drop again the Home Folder Files and File System Files from my Ext HD (applying overwrite to anything conflicting) and I would be set and could continue from where I left without having to download again all the programs, add-ons, etc, etc ,etc?
Pretty much. Remember, however, you usually don't back up programs, add-ons (like for FireFox), etc..., just data those programs create or manipulate. If a program is damaged or inadvertently deleted merely reinstall it from the repository. Don't bother backing it up. (IF, however, it is a program you installed from a binary you downloaded from a reputable site, like Oracle or Nokia, you would want to back up that binary because it is usually the install file.

Oh, don't forget to backup your text file containing all your account and website passwords!

Re: Worked and now doesn't: USB mobile stick on Kubuntu 11.04

      Dear GG,
This clarifies it all pretty well for me. Honestly, it took off a lot of pressure as I understood something basic, I did not understand before. I see how it is and can use it. THANKS.
Now, and this is really surprising I have one more thing to handle and I am done with all what I really wanted to do. And this is as follows:
I downloaded Thinderbird. Then I applied the drag and drop from the already saved files. Wonderful, all fine, files restored, folders there, add-ons work.
Firefox is part of Ubuntu 10.10 on installing from the CD so I just right away did the same and drag and dropped from the saved Firefox files everything as I did with Thinderbird. However it said that it wanted to install the extensions from the extension folder. I OK-ed it. It froze and no more action since. Only the message that Firefox is already running but cannot open unless I restart. So I restarted, then even shut down fully and restarted. No change. I uninstalled Firefox using Ubuntu Software Center and then reinstalled it. Still the same. Did it 2 more times. No change.
So right now, at the finish line my Firefox does not work and I have no idea how to handle this one if uninstall did not even do it. Please help me out with this one as a last step.
(I will probably go to sleep as it is 5:53 and I did nto sleep yet - last night similar. But will be back as soon as I can.

There is probably a conflicting setting on the config file, which is found here:
        /home/youraccountname/.mozilla-thunderbird/

You can delete the folder ".mozilla-thunderbird" and then restart Thunderbird. You will have to reconfigure your IPS account and re-add your addresses. (That's why I always used the "Export" feature to export my email addresses to an external file in a format about any email client can read. (Personally, I use KMail).

Re: Worked and now doesn't: USB mobile stick on Kubuntu 11.04

I understand. Imagine in the meantime I just once more uninstalled it with KPackageManager and reinstalled it and all works just fine. Now I downloaded all the add-ons, etc I like and my computer is set-up quite well. Internet functions too with the T-mobile stick being used.
I also got rid of tons of back-ups made with SBackup and just kept the relevant ones and all got much simpler. Lots of free place. This is because of your clarifying that all is a file in Linux. I simply drag and dropped my /home/IG88. However I could not do it on the whole "file system" neither on the "root". It says I have no permission.
So my final problem is then (I thought it was the one yesterday but here I go again) that I do not want to reinstall all programs with all their components, updates, etc whenever there would be a crash or such. It takes really a long time to find, type in, install and sometimes even configure programs. I did understand you slanted me t do it so but I do not feel any compassion to do that.
I'd like to know how do I make it that I can actually simply save away all my settings, programs, etc and I can just restore from there - without having to download again and set-up everything from scratch. (The own music, documents, pictures, videos and such I just store it syncronized anyway.
Did I communicate what I am looking for? Just a simple solution of storing away all the system with all necessary things so I could easily just reinstall from where I saved it on my Ext HD and that would be it.
And My Documents and such I have no problem with as I drag-and-drop save them regularly.
Now I repeated myself. Any suggestions GG?

Re: Worked and now doesn't: USB mobile stick on Kubuntu 11.04

Sounds like your are wanting to do a 'bare metal' backup - a backup of everything. That's what I do. I backup my entire laptop HDD to an external USB HDD. I have three *buntu OS's installed, each with separate /home partitions, and a single swap partition. I use Parted Magic 6.0 to do this, using the included Clonezilla Partclone program. With the backups so created, I could, if I had to, pop in a new HDD in my laptop, boot the Parted Magic LiveCD and restore the backup from the USB HDD to the new laptop HDD and I'd be back in business. It's as simple as that.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: Worked and now doesn't: USB mobile stick on Kubuntu 11.04

Yes GG, this is exactly what I want. I want a 'bare metal' (funny word) back-up on my Ext HDD and/or on a DVD. Exactly like the distro ISOs we download and use to have a full system. Only that mine should be including all the programs I have as well as their proper settings, desktop, etc - because compered to the original distro ISO DVD we usually make lots of changes, add and remove programs, make a lot of different settings, etc. But I want the option to exclude - if I wish - my documents, music, videos and pictures from the 'bare metal' back-up. Otherwise EVERYTHING to be there.
So I now check for the program you advised and see if that is it.
I am still very thankful of your help!

Wasn't mine, it was Snowhog's recommendation. I don't do bare-metal backups. Besides, Snowhog's knows more about that stuff than I do. Follow his recommendations closely!

If, as I'm doing, a 'bare metal' backup isn't what you want to do, but rather, you want to create a LiveCD/DVD of your existing system (excluding certain directories), then you might find Transforming your Installation into a Live DVD/CD informative.

Snowhog, sorry for not seeing it was your helpful reply. I took a look on the advised Ubuntu Forums link but I got lost. I have too much I do not understand. Isn't there a program with an easy to use graphical to just click or type in what I want and does that?
