    Re: wireless won't connect

Yup - it's working and it's the correct driver. I wanted to see if if the correct driver was loading (it is) and if there were any conflicting modules loading that should be blacklisted (there aren't).

If the driver wasn't working at all you wouldn't see any wireless networks so that part's good. You've got the right driver and no conflicting modules, so we're pointed in the right direction.

Okay, next - let's check for network-manager components. Please post the output of

    dpkg -l | grep network

This will dump a list of packages with 'network' in either the package name or the description - all network-manager components should have 'rc' as the first two characters. Any that have 'ii' are still installed. Mine looks like this -

    wizard@wizard-netbook:~$ dpkg -l | grep network
ii avahi-autoipd 0.6.27-2+squeeze1 Avahi IPv4LL network address configuration daemon
ii ifupdown 0.6.10 high level tools to configure network interfaces
ii iproute 20100519-3 networking and traffic control tools
ii iputils-ping 3:20100418-3 Tools to test the reachability of network hosts

rc libnm-glib2 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 network management framework (GLib shared library)

        Re: wireless won't connect

I was gone for a while, doing wife requests. Wizard has things under control. Just FYI, here is the modinfo on some mods you need:

modinfo rt73usb lists as an alias: usb:v07D1p3C03d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*
which means Vendor 07D1 and Product 3c03d, the values given in your lsusb output.

        It also gives:
        depends: rt2x00lib,rt2x00usb,crc-itu-t
        vermagic: 2.6.35-25-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
        parm: nohwcryptisable hardware encryption. (bool)
which shows that it depends on modules rt2X00lib, rt2X00usb and crc-itu-t , which are usually automatically loaded when modprobe is used to load the main module. The only options are turning hardware encryption on or off using Boolean logic. Boolean values can be:
        a) 0 (zero) - disabled / no / false
        b) Non zero - enabled / yes / true
So, one can load rt73usb and turning off hardware encryption using
modprobe rt73usb nohwcrypt=0 (or no or false)

In the /etc/modprobe.d directory is the options.conf file in which one can add (as root)
        options rt73usb nohwcrypt=0
in order to have the setting automatically set at boot up.

        modinfo rt2x00lib gives:
        filename: /lib/modules/2.6.35-25-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00lib.ko
        license: GPL
        description: rt2x00 library
        version: 2.3.0
        author: http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com
        srcversion: 838CF6D50A9AEA9437F7BCE
        depends: mac80211,led-class,cfg80211
        vermagic: 2.6.35-25-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
Which shows that "modprobe rt73usb" loads rt2x00lib, which causes modprobe to load mac80211 and led-class and cfg80211.

        modinfo rt2x00usb gives:
        filename: /lib/modules/2.6.35-25-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00usb.ko
        license: GPL
        description: rt2x00 usb library
        version: 2.3.0
        author: http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com
        srcversion: 6CDEF4D78ED4D8A00F7BE6C
        depends: rt2x00lib,mac80211
        vermagic: 2.6.35-25-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
which shows that it depends on two modules which rt73usb is already going to or has loaded. Like rt2x00lib, It has no parameters.

modinfo led-class, modinfo cfg80211 and modinfo crc-itu-t show no dependencies or parameters.

That's quite an eyefull there Grey Geek, is it just for my info (in which case I would need a few hours to understand any of it, if I can understand it at all), or is there something I should be doing?

            Re: wireless won't connect

John, at this point it is for the possibility that hardware encryption is messing your connection up, if it is on, or because it is off. So, depending on Wizard's suggestions, it is an option to try. As he says, the ralink chips can be flaky, especially if they are on a USB port. Frankly, I expected more than just one parameter to be available and I am not too optomistic that changing nohwcrypt will have any affect, but one never knows unless one tries.

John, network-manager is still installed. Looks like you got all the pieces except the most important one

ii netbase 4.45ubuntu1 Basic TCP/IP networking system
ii network-manager 0.8.4~git.20110319t175609.d14809b-0ubuntu3 network management framework daemon
rc network-manager-gnome 0.8.4~git.20110318t152954.9c4c9a0-0ubuntu1 network management framework (GNOME frontend)

rc plasma-widget-networkmanagement 0.9~svngit20110408-0ubuntu2 Network Management widget for KDE4 Plasma
ii python-wicd 1.7.0+ds1-6 wired and wireless network manager - Python module

So - before anything else, you do

              sudo apt-get remove network-manager

                  Good eye, Wizard!! 8)

I have network-manager listed in my dpkg -l | grep network but it is prefixed with "rc", not "ii", so I glossed over it!

Once he removes that he should have no problem with a "bad password" setting up his connection.

I know the answer to this now and it's my fault so I'll apologize for it now.

Wildcards in Linux don't match *no* character, so network-manager* will target any string that begins with network-manager that has at least one character after the string. So - it'd remove everything *except* network-manager.

So, network-manage* would have taken out network-manager but network-manager* wouldn't have.

So, the hundred or so frayed nerve endings are my fault. My apologies that we didn't trip across this sooner.

I have a similar problem. In my case the laptop does not detect any WiFi connection. however, when I boot the laptop with windows XP there is no problem.
