    Re: wireless won't connect

    No go,

I am having trouble with understanding the security settings as the descriptions are not the same.

I tried to change from wpa to wpa 2 and then my other (windows) machine, the one I am now on, wouldn't connect, I used the choice WPA2_PERSONAL, encryption type AES. No connection.

So now I am back to the WPA-PSK with TKIP.

On my router the option selected is "Security: WPA-PSK" "Encryption TKIP"
In wicd the option is "WPA1/2 (Preshared key)"

    Are they the same thing?

There is no change in the machines response.

Yes the caps are OK, I have the password showing to be sure.

I have wpasupplicant already installed but I reinstalled it anyway. No change.

      Re: wireless won't connect

For mystery wireless connectivity issues in my home, such as when configuring a new laptop or netbook, I start with no encryption, and get the connection established and verified that way. When I'm sure the connection itself is reliable, then I turn on encryption on the router and the machine. WPA or WPA2, with AES encryption, is the best choice. Yes, the "PSK" or preshared key is your password to open the connection.

If it makes you nervous to run your router with no encryption, just disconnect the other computers physically from it, while you get your portable with wireless working. Then plug them back in after you've got the encryption turned back on and working.

        Re: wireless won't connect

John, I'd go with dibl's suggestion and if that fails I think we'd better open this up to the group. Maybe somebody can think of something I've missed.

I could show you how to script the connection but the built-in tools should work and I think at this point we should see if the machine will connect to the access point with security disabled.

I'm gonna stick around, I'm just asking for second (third, fourth) opinions

          Re: wireless won't connect

Allow me to suggest that you try WPA1/2(Passphrase) instead of shared key. IF you still get "bad password" then you still have bits and pieces of Knetworkmanager hanging around on your system.

Thanks all of you for your time,

The unsecured network alternative is unsuccessful.
We have already been this way a dozen steps ago. I have tried again with the same result. "unable to Get IP address"

I will try the Grey Geeks suggestion (although I think we have already tried this as well.

              Re: wireless won't connect

On the unsecured network after you try to connect when you get the "failed to obtain IP address" open up a terminal window and do

              sudo dhclient wlan0

and see if it connects then.

I think maybe there may be some network-manager pieces lying around as well - my *wired* connection does that when I reboot my router if I'm running network-manager. That's why I run wicd even on wired connections.

                Re: wireless won't connect

If what wizard suggested doesn't work then opne a Konsole and issue
                wicd-curses
and use the console version of wicd to see if you can set up your wifi using the passphrase method, not the sharedky.

First to your suggestion wizard, no go, but in new way, now wicd doesn't even see my wireless connection, it says "no wireless networks available". Previously my connection was recognised but wouldn't connect. So if I have some knetwork bits lying about, where might I find them?

Ok, let's go back to fundamentals. I scanned the previous posts and your hardware wasn't mentioned. Your wifi appears to be randomly turning on and off. It is off now because you've rebooted just before you tried wizard's suggestions?

Regardless. What is the make and model of your wifi device? Use lspci in a Konsole and post what is given here. Then, we'll determine which driver you need to activate it. From there we'll discuss if that driver is all you need, or if you need to modify some options.

                      To Grey Geek,

After starting wicd curses (I have been letting go a few of them today), I get "no wireless networks found". I try to configure it and get lots of gibberish (as usual) but it seems a wicd daemon has stopped and I should start it again. How do I do that?

                          Re: wireless won't connect

Is this a USB or PCMCIA wireless card? It's not showing up in lspci.

If it's USB can we have the output of lsusb instead?

                          thanks -

Ah. Ralink chipsets can be a little funky under Linux. Okay, we need one more thing. Can we get the output of

                              lsmod | grep rt

The driver that *should be* loading is rt73usb. lsmod shows you a list of installed modules and if we pipe it through grep we get a list of installed drivers containing the string 'rt'

That should tell us which driver is loading.
