    [SOLVED]Trouble getting HP Printer Working

I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 (an all-in one multifunction), and cannot get hp-setup to install the printer.

The printer is installed on static ip address: 192.168.0.13, and I can ping this fine.

The printer works fine from two other PCs (running Gentoo).

From hp-check -t it appears to be a problem with dbus.

    Any help much appreciated.

You may need HPLIP, which is in the repository.

This URL tells you the minimum version number needed:
      http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...500_a909a.html

and here is where you can download either a manual or automatic installer:

Installing hplip from KPackageKit isn't sufficient to resolve all the dependencies?

Re: Trouble getting HP Printer Working

Some HP printers, like my HP LaserJet Professional p1606dn duplex laser, only worked with HPLIP that had a version number greater than some value. At the time the HPLIP in the repository and the list of printers didn't include my exact model, so I installed the version required from the HP website.

          As always, YMMV

Re: Trouble getting HP Printer Working

This printer has been supported by hplip for ages; I'm not at the affected PC (actually laptop) just now, but I did check the version installed and it's a lot higher than that required as stated in the website linked above.

I'm really new to Kubuntu and I don't know how to properly troubleshoot the installation. For instance hp-check tells me there's no dbus, which I know to be incorrect.

Thanks for the help so far.

              http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...ard/index.html

              Installation Wizard
The following pages will help you download HPLIP.

First, we will determine if the version of HPLIP included with your operating system will work with your printer and if your printer is supported by HPLIP.
              .... snip ...
You have selected Ubuntu 11.04 using the HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-one Printer - a909a.

Ubuntu 11.04 supplies HPLIP 3.11.5 and it does support your printer.

As the version of HPLIP supplied with your operating system supports your printer, you may continue to use that version of HPLIP.

You may now optionally download the latest version of HPLIP to get access to new features and bug fixes.
Clicking "Next" a couple times took me to this website:
              http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...all/index.html

Which holds essentially the same instructions I had to follow to install my HP laser duplex printer.

Re: Trouble getting HP Printer Working

Manually installing hplip gets the same results as through KPackageKit; it fails to find the printer on the network, even when I tell it the printer's ip address.

Re: Trouble getting HP Printer Working

I have a wireless print server. I have my printer connected to it, and from it via an ethernet cable to my wireless router. I use an ad hoc connection with an IP address of 92.168.1.99 (because I have my wireless set to begin dispensing IP addresses at *.100).

What type of Internet socket are you using with CUPS?

Is it connected by ethernet or by wireless.

If you go to System Settings -> Printer Configuration, is your printer listed under Local Printers.
If it is, what's the Device URI and what do the Driver Details say.

If it isn't, what happens when you click the New Printer button (you may have to wait quite some time for something to happen).

Is it connected by ethernet or by wireless.

The printer is connected to the network by ethernet. The laptop connects to the network by wireless

If it isn't, what happens when you click the New Printer button (you may have to wait quite some time for something to happen).

When I added the printer using this method, it appeared to work, but when I tried to print something I got the following error message from cups:

                      "/usr/lib/cups/backend/dnssd failed"

                      The driver details say:
                      Device URI: dnssd://Officejet%20Pro%208500%20A909a%20%5B50E12D%5D._pri nter._tcp.local/

Printer Model: HP Officejet Pro 8500 a909a, hpcups 3.11.7

                      Thanks

Try changing the Device URI to socket://192.168.0.13:9100
Then click the Change button in the Driver Details box and, after going through the question/answer routine, select the HPIJS driver.

                        Hopefully, this should cure it

                          Didn't work

This makes no sense to me. This printer is fully supported by hplip, it works fine with two other Linux PCs on the same LAN, and I can ping it with no errors.

Re: Trouble getting HP Printer Working

I have an hp 7600'ish all-in-one office-jet printer and I install it using hplip-gui (hp-toolbox). Trying installing hplip-gui and then running the hp-toolbox from your 'K' menu.

Works like a charm and locates the printer without issue for me. Also shows ink levels and has a whole slew of features.

You could also check your firewall settings to make sure you are not blocking anything. Hp drivers are pretty robust and, as you, I have never ran into any problems with the software, so it might also be a network issue.

As a side note, I have never had to manually install deps for my HP printers on *ubuntu OS.

                            Hope this helps!

                            Joe

Re: Trouble getting HP Printer Working

OK, this is definitely something firewall related. I managed to install the printer and scanner by opening firestarter and disabling the firewall.

However, when I switch to my regular user (which doesn't have sudo access), there is still a communication error, and the user is unable to scan or print.

The weird thing is, if I stop the firestarter service then log back into the restricted user, it still refuses to connect to the printer. It also doesn't work if I add a firestarter policy to accept incoming connections from 192.168.0.0/24, and all outgoing is allowed.

Basically I have to open firestarter, and input my password to be able to scan. I have no experience at all setting up firewalls in Linux, and the iptables service doesn't appear in /etc/init.d at all.
