I have the Proprietary driver installed and active (from Additional Drivers applet) in my 11.04 x64 install on my Pavilion dv7t laptop. It is an i7-720QM, with a separate, dedicated 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 graphics card. However, the graphics performance under Kubuntu is very bad - so laggy that it is constantly causing me to miss click-points, etc. I also have OpenSuSE 11.4 x64 and Win7 x64 installed on the same laptop. Graphics performance in both of those OS's is very good. So I know Linux is capable of very good video performance, but for some reason Kubuntu has a lot of lag for just common desktop stuff, like resizing windows. The only "fix" suggestion I can find is to turn off compositing, but that seems wrong in principle if I know it works fine in OpenSuSE. I have heard horror stories about building the ATI drivers under Kubuntu and this is my primary computer, which I don't want to bork. Other than that, it seems a great distro, but the lag is truly frustrating, especially knowing it's specific to Kubuntu.
Can anyone help with this? Maybe I have some setting wrong for KDE in Kubuntu? This has been a persistent and frustrating problem on an otherwise very friendly and useful distro.
Thanks, Patti
