I'm running Kubuntu 11.04 (KDE 4.6.5, all updates) on a Samsung Q530 laptop, which has Intel Integrated Graphics (Arrondale).
I run an external monitor (1600x900) via the HDMI output, set to be left of the laptop's integrated monitor (1366x768). Upon rebooting, Kubuntu forgets the previous monitor settings; it seems almost random, sometimes running both monitors as clones, and at other times one monitor but not the other.
After booting, I go into Displays & Monitors and set things as I like them, only the have the computer (after several minutes) disable the external monitor. Usually, setting Displays & Monitors again will stabilize the system, and I can work for days before a reboot frells things up again.
Yes, I have saved a working configuration as a the default.
I am NOT using an xorg.conf. As I understand it, current versions of Xorg have integrated open source drivers for Arrondale chipsets.
I don't use an xorg.conf because I sometimes travel with the laptop, and would like it to work more like my Windows system, where it automatically adjusts to whether or not the secondary monitor is plugged in.
