Can read DVDs but not CDs

Hi,

I can read DVDs but not CDs on my Lenovo T61.

DVDs automount fine, appear in Dolphin, etc, etc, but audio CDs aren't recognized by any player I've tried, the only response seems to be a loud humming - I don't know if that's the fan or the disc itself spinning like crazy.

Right now a data CD I tried is just sitting (quietly) in the drive, not appearing in Dolphin or under /media, nothing in the device notification, and the eject button is inactive.

My best guess is that this is a hardware issue. Google hasn't been my friend at all.

Anyone got any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

When I put an audio CD into my machine an icon appears in the right hand side of the panel at the bottom of the screen, this icon is a circle with what looks like the USB device symbol inside. Clicking on that icon brings up the CD and further clicking on the CD brings up options such as browse contents/open with Dolphine (can't remember exact words.)
