    Sound - SOLVED

    Installed from Live CD and sound no longer works. Booted Vista to confirm that the h/w, plugs and speakers are working and plugged in correctly. Everyting fine under Vista.

    Sound worked under 10.10.

    Under Multimedia in "System Settings" the Phonon" panel fails to list the Intel h/w for Audio output, but lists it for Audio capture.

    How do I get Phonon to recognise the Intel audio output h/w?

    Mine does the same but sound is working fine.

    Read the other threads in this forum for tips on sound - there's a few of them.

    If none of them help, post back with info on what you've done and the outputs from some of the suggested troubleshooting commands.

      Investigated the phonon web site and docs. The docs mention something about 2 files: ~/asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf

      Both files are missing.

      The docs also suggest running a shell script they provide which outputs details on the sound h/w. Ran the script and it detected the sound card(s).

      Also, tried the xine and vlc backends for phonon - same results.

      Another, maybe related problem is in the "System Settings-Multimedia" menu for phonon. I can set the preferences for which card to use for audio capture, but it then reverts to whatever the system chooses on each boot. My preferences do "stick". ?.?.?.

        I'm pretty sure you need ALSA working before you can even think about anything else. That's the driver interface for the soundcard, IIRC. Without that you're never going to get a peep out of your speakers.

        /etc/asound.conf is the config file for your ALSA.

        Go into your package manager and search for alsa. If it's not there, alsa-base and alsa-utils will probably be enough to get you going.

          Just checked and ALSA is installed. I even installed a few more that looked like they may apply. Still no sound and the sound output is simply not listed.

            What's in your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf?

            Are any of your sound cards showing up in dmesg? Are they getting IRQs?

            What's the output of `cat /proc/asound/modules`?

            What does `aplay -l` tell you?

              It would appear to me (not really knowing anything about what I'm reading) that both the Huappage and Intel h/w is detected

                It's probably working fine but outputting to the wrong card.

                  @geezer if you have no need for the Hauppauge TV tuner, I would advise you to pull it. Besides the possibility that it is being set for sound output (and getting in the way of the Intel HDA STAC chip), if you ever try to use a scanner or a webcam it will cause all kinds of confusion, as it is also seen as an optical device.

                    Thanks dibl. Pulled the Hauppage TV tuner card and after fiddling around with the controls under "System Settings->Multimedia-<Phonon" I got a combination of settings that produced sound output. After I got one set of settings working, then it seemed that the others that didn't work initally now do ??

                    Now I need to get audio input working and recording.

                    In looking for something to experiment with audio input, I booted "Pulseaudio Volume Control" and tried the setting under "Input Devices", "Analog Input" and "Analog Line In" both show a bar indicating that a signal is detected with good signal strength, but the input is not being sent to the speaker output. Under the "Recording" tab there is a message displayed "No Application is currently recording audio. So maybe I need a recoding app to have the line in audio sent to the speakers also? Know any good recording apps?

                      If you haven't already installed it, install the alsamixergui package. I have found that with one of my microphones, it is necessary to "lock" the "front mic" and "front mic boost" channels, and turn up the volume. Then it works correctly in pavucontrol.

                      Also, if you use a webcam or some other kind of USB microphone, make sure the snd_usb_audio module is loaded.

                        Installed Audacity. Seems like an excellent app, but the complexity level is such that it is going to take me a long time to really know.

                        At least I have been able to get the input signal and hear the input from the Line in socket through Audacity and record the signal. Haven't saved anything yet though.

                        Now if I can just get the Line In socket signal T'd to the speakers even without a recording app installed and running. Any suggestion on how to do that? I've exhausted all of the options and option combinations in "System Settings->Multimedia->Phonon" without any luck.
