    Printer setup

I have set up printer for my kununtu installation to use a cups printerserver on the network. Today I got some problems reaching the printer setup. The message I got was that the service printer setup had not a interface Kcmodule with the keyword "system-config-printer-kde/system-config -printer-kde.py.

Possible reasons for this was an upgrade fault and a module got parent loss, or I had som old third party modules in the system.

Has anybody experienced this? How can it be mended?

    hi dagring
it would greatly help folks to help you if you could be very specific about your printer type, model number etc.

I have a Dell Laser Printer 1710. It have worked fine with CUPS earlier, but it seems to be something with the CUPS server or the setup of printer in Kubuntu 11.04.

        Re: Printer setup

I'm not at my 'buntu box right now but the first thing that springs to mind is that a required component to set up printing in KDE might not be installed.

In kpackagekit search for system-config-printer-kde and see if there are any modules fitting that description are not installed. You will be well advised to select the check for updates button first.

What version of KDE are you running? If not 4.6.3 it might be worth upgrading to see if that has fixed the issue. In kpackagekit add the following as a new source

        Code:
        ppa:kubuntu-ppa
After the package list has been updated select the apply updates button to update KDE.

Logout and log back in and try again.

If that doesn't fix it you can bypass kde to install your printer. In your browser address bar type

        Code:
        localhost:631
That will open the Cups setup screen from which you should be able to get your printer working.

          Re: Printer setup

Thanx for good answer. I have updated kde, but the printer setup for kde has the same text (in the message) which I wrote about in the first post. I have accessed the CUPS dashboard, and I'm connected to the printer. How stable this is going to be will show.

            Re: Printer setup

            Hi,
in case anyone is still reading this thread, it seems that I have the same problem. I'm getting exactly the same error message. However, the browser interface workaround does not work for me!
I'm printing on a network printer through a print server; I can view the print queue at
            Code:
            http://our.print.server:631/pritners
            , but nothing else. I have KDE 4.6.2 (kubuntu 11.04, 64bit).
Is there any other way to fix this? At the moment I'm basically unable to print anything... and this is the case on both, my laptop and my desktop, so there must be some problem in KDE (the laptop has never been connected to a printer, but I still can't access the printer config, as described by the OP).
            Any thoughts?
            Thanks,
            Chopstick
