No simultaneous sound output digital/analog, AD1988b

Using 10.04 I had simultaneous audio output (both digital and analog channels) at initial install without any settings interference.

New install of 11.04: Initially, both digital and analog were recognized, put of the 20-something options, none allowed simultaneous audio output.

Did an old trick and added

    options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. This allows me to select either input/output directly, but still not both.

I'll post more detail if anyone has any suggestions...

I have tried lots of things including creating a dual pcm device in asound.conf but I can't get it right. I tried installing pulseaudio, but this killed my digital channel entirely. Most of the websites I've found are 2-5 years old so don't apply (I tried some of their advice anyway).

It seems the devs. waited until they got pulseaudio working before switching to phonon. Great :P

Basically, I connect my stereo monitor speakers to the analog output and my digital surround headphones to the digital output. Then, if I'm playing a game or watching a show I can use the headphones and not disturb the house. I consider the idea that I have to launch System Settings and change devices a regression from 10.04.
    Code:
    aplay -l
