    Boot/Video problem - Solved

About a week after updating to 11.04 beta 1 from 10.10, there was another update and now I can't boot. About 6 seconds after grub, I get some colors across the top third of the screen, and that's it for the display. The hard drive light looks like it continues to boot but the display does not recover.

I have a AMD 64 bit X4 Hp computer with Nvidia gforce 9100. The coputer is doing dua' boot with windows 7 being the other OS.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

It sounds like the video driver is misbehaving. Can you reinstall it?

I'm not sure which driver to use. As I recall there were several Nvidia driver versions

At the user's prompt, you can enter:

        Code:
        glxinfo | grep NVIDIA

and it will show you which driver is installed, unless you are using nouveau.

glxinfo | grep NVIDIA and glxinfo | grep nouveau returns "Error: unable to open display"

Well, that's consistent with a broken driver installation.

Did you use the "Additional Hardware" feature in the System menu, or did you manually install a downloaded driver?

              I updated. (apt-get dist-upgrade)

                Re: Boot/Video problem

There might be a log file at /var/log/Xorg.0.log that tells the driver version that it tried to run.

It's trying to run NVIDIA. But that module does not exist.

                    Re: Boot/Video problem

I got it! I broke out a laptop and went
into kpackagekit to see what drivers/modules were there with NVIDIA in them. Back at the troubled desktop I installed nvidia-current. It works, but not as smoothly as before.

                    Thanks for the help dibl,
