    [SOLVED] KNotes shortcut doesn't work

    KNotes 3.9

I have KNotes in my System Tray at startup (System Settings > Startup and Shutdown). Right-click the app icon in System Tray and select Configure Shortcuts and set a shortcut for New Note. In this case, I set Meta+n. Saved and tried it. Nothing happens. Pressing Meta+n does not open a new note. I've logged out/in and still the same. I've shutdown and rebooted and logged in and still the same.

    Why doesn't the shortcut work?

Did you set a "global shortcut" (there are three types of shortcuts you can set...and the first two only work when the application has focus)

You shouldn't have to do that, should you? KNotes is running - it's in the System Tray. It's own Shortcut configuration feature that allows you to set a shortcut for various actions, and New Note is one, should 'just work' if it is set, should it not?

If it's running in the tray it does not have focus (and application specific shortcuts don't work)...one may wish to use the same shortcut in multiple applications to do different things (or the same thing), and the system wouldn't know which application you wish to target.

You can set the "global shortcut" from the same dialog, just scroll to the right if you do not see it.

There is just a distinction between application specific shortcuts and global shortcuts (and global shortcuts obviously can't be in conflict...they must be unique)

Okay. Didn't notice that. Thank you.

The 'global' shortcut is already set as alt+shift+n, and that works. That's all I wanted, so the default global shortcut is fine.
