    ubuntu fonts look different

    Anyone know what's happening to the ubuntu fonts?

    After an update yesterday, all my fonts have gone a bit funny.
    All KDE fonts now look bold, though I have checked and they aren't set to bold plus anything MEANT to be bold is even bolder.
    If I switch to a different font then they all look wiry.
    On the other hand, GTK apps all look more wiry than normal with all fonts, including the ubuntu one.

    I've checked my ubuntu natty (gnome) install and all fonts look normal there.

    I've always had problems with very thin wiry fonts in Kubuntu. Any extra "boldness" is welcomed. May be an attempt to correct reported problems?

    I'm currently trying to re-install Kubuntu 11.04 but the Beta 1 disc doesn't work so I'm going back to a recent alpha daily build. I'll report back once installed to let you know how my fonts look once I'm installed and fully updated.

      I have the same problem. Wiry in FF but thick in KDE using the same exact settings I had in 10.10.

        font size of 11pt? by default in kubuntu it should be 9pt. that might be why , unless you set them that way on purpose.

          I set them that way on purpose. 9 is way too small on my screen. I have the same settings I've used in past versions but this thickening of the font is new only in 11.04.

          DejaVu font is fine so that's what I'm using now. It's only the Ubuntu font that's messed up ,maybe some others too, but the Ubuntu font is definitely not right.

            I usually set mine to 10 or 12pt as, at least for me, even numbered font sizes always seem to render better. I agree that 9 is WAY too small. I never understood that choice.

              Well I have done a fresh install from the beta 1 disc and the fonts are the same, KDE apps all look bold and firefox and chromium look "normal".
              By normal I mean they way they look on an ubuntu install.

                Finally got Beta 1 installed!

                Yes, there is a difference in the application fonts. Most are what I would call "bold" and Firefox is now normal which is an improvement. Previously Firefox fonts were very thin while most other applications were just about acceptable. There's still a long way to go until the quality is as good as Gnome but I'm very anxious to explore KDE on a long term basis as I'm not too happy with the way Ubuntu is going with Unity.

                A great improvement, the best Kubuntu / KDE yet. I can't wait for the 4.62 update.

                  Definitely the Ubuntu font received a fattening diet lately Too bad, too, because I really liked it. All other fonts render like they use to, and FreeSans is also very very nice, so all in all, not the biggest loss. The Ubuntu font is still nice for window titles and other places where you *want* bold

                    Re: ubuntu fonts look different

                    The only place that I've observed this 'problem' is in Muon Package Manager (installed last night) when I first launched it. The application window was smaller than I like, and the fonts were very bold. Resizing the application window to a larger size resulted in the fonts becoming 'normal', so for those experiencing this, are the applications you observe this in running less than full-screen? I didn't have to increase Muon to full-screen, just had to increase it's window size.

                    That said, I don't have any problems with the font in any other application I've run, except for the numeral 4 in KMyMoney.

                      Hmmm... No... I've never actually experienced fonts changing size due to window resizing? Or maybe that's because I always lock the DPI to 96? And given that all other fonts render like always, I'm pretty confident it's just the Ubuntu font having had a bit of a redesign

                      Actually... Yeah, just checked - definitely changed - here's a local copy of the previous family being compared to the ones just installed in Natty b1:
                      daniel@daniel:~/.fonts$ find ./ -type f -exec diff "{}" "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/{}" \;
                      Binary files ./Ubuntu-B.ttf and /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/./Ubuntu-B.ttf differ
                      diff: /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/./Ubuntu-I.ttf: No such file or directory
                      Binary files ./Ubuntu-R.ttf and /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/./Ubuntu-R.ttf differ
                      Binary files ./Ubuntu-BI.ttf and /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/./Ubuntu-BI.ttf differ

                      I'm gonna try copying the old ones over and restart X to see if it makes any difference

                      EDIT: Check out attached screenshots, one with the /usr/share/fonts folder from before Natty, the other with the one installed by Natty. Looking at them like this, I'm tempted to say that this *is* actually a bug and not just an aesthetical modification.

                        I tend to agree that it appears the way you state. Interesting issue, though I can say I always change my FONT to something other than Ubuntu for all choices as I really don't like the Ubuntu FONT.

                            Interesting. It looks like you're not using subpixel rendering, is that correct?

                              This is strange indeed since I did a fresh install from the beta 1 last night and I have the bolder looking font direct from the install without any changes being made.

                              <EDIT>
                              Interestingly, I have just tried disabling both the DPI and AA in system settings and afterwards all the fonts look truly appalling and broken.
