Re: Safe to install Todays updates

Ok. Found a solution. This is not just a Kubuntu problem Over at the Natty ubuntu forums someone there's been some discussion of natty's non-booting.

I'm actually really & truly writing this from my natty installation.

    See here:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1677834

The long & the short of it is that "xserver-xorg-input-evdev"(2.6.0-1ubuntu1) needs to be downgraded to version 2.3.2. Here's the link from that post to the previous version:

      Please explain what you did!

Boot into the recovery mode -- root with networking, and use wget to download the tar and compile it?

Re: Safe to install Todays updates

Fix confirmed. Doing this from firefox in natty.

One way or another you need to get this file:

        AMD64 version:
        http://launchpadlibrarian.net/605857...u3b1_amd64.deb

        i386 version is here:
        http://launchpadlibrarian.net/605855...tu3b1_i386.deb

Prefix either of those with wget to download them directly, as in:
        wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/605855...tu3b1_i386.deb

Then get into your natty system (I used chroot) and install it with dpkg:

        sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-input-evdev_2.3.2-6ubuntu3b1_amd64.deb

        and reboot.

Edit: You may want to put a hold on this package for a while, to prevent it from "upgrading" to the broken version.

Re: Safe to install Todays updates

I downloaded the file using Windows. Then booted into Linux, installed the file. Thankfully, dpkg doesn't require arcane parameters in order to downgrade a package. Just dpkg -i <package>. Plus dpkg allows wild cards.

            Thanks, doctordruidphd! Those instructions worked.

When I started Natty in VB I held down the shift key until the Grub menu showed. Then I selected the recovery option and chose the root with networking option. From there I used the wget command to download the package and dpkg to install it. Then I rebooted and got my video back.

Re: Safe to install Todays updates

                No problem.

I actually found the solution some 6 or 7 hours before I was able to try it out. Saturday was too busy to spend more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time on this every 2 or 3 hours. But once I found out that installing GDM didn't help, I was pretty sure that it wasn't a KDE-specific problem.

Now I have the Natty discussion forum on Ubuntu forums bookmarked.

Re: Safe to install Todays updates

FYI - This issue is now resolved. New xserver-xorg-input-evdev fixes the segfault with X.

                  See:
                  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...1675614&page=4

Confirmed here that the new package works.

I ran the update just now and all appears to working correctly. I guess waiting was the right thing to do. Thanks everyone.

                      Greygeek -

When I hit shift, and select the recovery option, I don't see any sort of option to go to root with network support. The OS starts to load, then freezes at the bad package. I"m missing something obvious?

Update - Just updated today's build (31 Jan) and I was able to log in with no problems. Looks like they fixed it.

Plus it now includes KDE 4.6!
