Ok. Found a solution. This is not just a Kubuntu problem Over at the Natty ubuntu forums someone there's been some discussion of natty's non-booting.
I'm actually really & truly writing this from my natty installation.

The long & the short of it is that "xserver-xorg-input-evdev"(2.6.0-1ubuntu1) needs to be downgraded to version 2.3.2. Here's the link from that post to the previous version:
