11.04 is really in good shape!

I installed the 1/21/11 daily build of Natty last night in VBox. I did some updates and expected breakage but it's really pretty solid! I'm really liking the possibilities with ReKonq and LibreOffice.

I will most likely be first in line for the final release of this. Time to backup my data for the reformat . . . .

    Nicely done!

Of course, given that it's still Alpha 1, I believe you have cursed us all. There's still time for weird library conflicts in X libraries, KDE could ..., and then there's the packaging oopsie that we never saw coming.

FWIW, I've never used one of the pre-release versions where I didn't end up having to reinstall at least once. Sometimes it was my fault, sometimes packaging issues, and sometimes a combination of both. There's still 3 months for mischief and mayhem.

Believe me, I know there's still plenty of time for mayhem and that's why I'm only running it in VBox But compared to how 10.04 looked at alpha 1 stage, 11.04 is pretty well-composed!

Now we wait for the curse...

Re: 11.04 is really in good shape!

In preparation for writing the docs on development tools available for Natty I downloaded today's daily build and installed the 32 bit iso as a guest os in VBox.

I have to agree with you, rfakhrai, it is looking great. I am really impressed by the improvements in KPackageKit. For the first time in several years I did NOT install Synaptic. KPackageKit is stable, fast, fully featured, and easy to use. For Natty I am going to avoid apps built with GTK+ and see how that works out. That means no ThunderBird or FireFox, and no VLC, which will be hard to replace.

The installation splash screen says "Welcome to Kubuntu 10.10" but they'll get that fixed, no doubt.

I've encountered some app install failures (docbookswiki for one) and the files previously installed before the failure occurs are not removed, leaving a lot of useless apps that "autoremove" doesn't seem concerned about.

But, aside from those niggles, Natty is looking fantastic!

          VLC is Qt, not GTK.

As much as I'd like to keep everything Qt, I can't live without VLC or Thunderbird. I will, however, try the latest versions of KMail and DragonPlayer in 11.04 to see if I should consider it.

Re: 11.04 is really in good shape!

I used to use KMail but a few years ago I switched to Thunderbird. With K10.04 I switched back to KMail and haven't regretted it.

FireFox is becoming problematic. I don't quite know how to say it, but the closest I can come is that it seems, lately, to be the results of some ex windows programmers. It hesitates, freezes, stumbles and dies all too often. Right now, after I start it, I have to wait up to thirty seconds before it will accept a url or respond to a click. I've tried Chrome but didn't like it. I'm beginning to use Konq more and more, but it doesn't have all the video and audio codecs that FF has available. (It does show USTPO tiff graphics OK!).

VLC is the app that I hurt the most about losing. It is just too good and does soooo many things well.

Yeah, to be honest, I never even gave KMail a chance but from what I'm hearing the newest versions are well worth it. And I wouldn't mind any excuse to get away from Mozilla products.

Firefox has become just too bloated for me. I was experiencing similar ridiculous slow-downs as you, GG. I'm using Chrome right now and I love it. But my dream is to be able to use as many integrated programs within Kubuntu as possible. And from what I've seen of ReKonq in 11.04, I'm looking forward to hopefully making it my default.

But VLC ... I'm just not sure if I can do it

As was pointed out already, you don't have to give up VLC. It is a Qt application.

It may have been a recollection that VLC pulled in GTK dependencies when I installed it. Or, maybe I'm experiencing sometimers.

The change was somewhat recent. Maybe in the past year or so, so don't feel too bad.
