Java Plugin and browsers, ff 10.02

I am looking to resolve an issue that seems to have appeared after firefox was updated to 10.02 and Java applets no longer running.

    I have :

    Code:
    java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)
I have the sun-java packages locked so they can not be changed, but something, probably the ff sneaked around and nuked the plugin settings.

Normally I run the Java applets from a differing machine with an older setup of things, so was not aware that the ff 10.0.2 update nuked the plugin from working till I had to use a much newer machine.

I've tried to reinstall the plugin per various web posts and creating a symbolic link in this or that directory to the plugin, but the .so file is not there, nor is that path.

Note this is for 64bit Kubuntu Maverick and Oneiric

Testing via Konqi in http://javatester.org/version.html shows the correct information.

Any ideas on correcting this ? ? * On Maverick and on Oneiric as well.

    * NOTE: I am not interested in anything but REAL Sun Java, and not interested in Java 7, openjdk, icedtea etc.. Why? For one none of the software I use is compatible with these, never has been, never will be. I am not interested in updating Java to .31 if the process removes .26 since these packages are not available to reinstall. I am fully aware of the political BS going on with oracrudle et al over this.. I am simply not interested in their nonsense, I just want my software to work, and I'd like to know who broke the plugin to give them a piece of my mind.

    The solution:

    https://github.com/flexiondotorg/oab-java6

Follow this page to create an update to .31 which will UPDATE the standard packages.

This corrects the problem and reinstalls the plugin that ff is SNEAK REMOVING! Which is WRONG WRONG WRONG!

Fix applies to both Maverick (restores plugin and Java applets run correctly) and Oneiric. NOTE: I no longer install ff in my setup, only Konqueror and that works and reports correctly in Oneiric.

For what ever reason the name of the symbolic link has changed it now has to be two links to point to the plugin .so file which all the instructions point to the old name.

      Hi...

      Welcome to the forums :-)

Well, I'm glad you got it fixed although I've never heard of Mozilla trying to secretly remove Java plugins.

Also, would you please mark this post as "SOLVED."

      Thanks :-)

Since the plugin was working fine till the upgrade from 3.6.x to 9 to 10... since ff is not my primary browser and the system in question was not used for this task this change was not noticed.

I locked the sun-java6 packages as soon as the whole BS started as I don't appreciate the debacle or the plan! I want Java and need REAL Java there are differences which render software incompatible, and none of this is going to change by the vendors ... So instead it appears from cursory review that the ff updates were the sneak attack vector to remove Java use via applets. Since I don't use ff except in a few rare instances I just let it update. It takes su perms to remove those symlinks and I would know if that was done, one I am the only one with the root passwords, sudoer access, and the machines this was done are mine, and not shared anyway. And I would know if I started deleting things.

With the asinine update schedule and this change has put ff into the scrap heap, and those packages are now blocked from any further updates. I will decide how and what software is on my system(s). THANK YOU VERY MUCH! URRRGH..and Sun Java 6 will continue to be on my systems and distributed as needed. Some one needs to be taken out to the marina and draged behind one of his yachts. Act like an insolent juvenile get the punishment of the same.
