    Experience with KDE4.6 from PPA-Backports?

    Hi there,
can anyone share some experience with the ppa-backports, which apparently have KDE4.6.
Is it risky to upgrade? I'm in the midst of a project and I don't want to break my computer, so I'm a bit hesitant to make a full dist upgrade... how are the backports from Natty in this respect?
I've heard there are a couple of nice feature.
    Thanks,
    Chopstick

There's your answer - don't. At least, wait until you are in a position that 'taking the risk' (there is always risk) won't cause you serious harm should the worst happen.

I guess the reason I'm contemplating upgrading is that my laptop acquired a couple of annoying hic-ups over the time, and there may be a chance that these can be cured by upgrading to KDE 4.6. I actually plan to reinstall the system as soon as I have some time.
      The two major things are:
      (1) The desktop environment randomly freezes and I have to reboot (that happens maybe once per day, I have no idea why, but others have reported that as well (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1599145).
      (2) Kmail sometimes forgets which emails it already downloaded from a POP3 server and just downloads everything again, producing a huge number of duplicates (this is easy to remove, but still annoying. It has been reported on kde.org (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=244860).

I google a little and found this from January 2011: http://ubuntuguide.net/kde-4-6-0-rel...erick-included. So it looks like you can have at least Kde 4.6.0 from PPA for Maverick. And it is an important difference. PPA is more stable and PPA-Backport is more testing. So you should rather use PPA then PPA-Backport.

Thanks josefko, but it seems this is also backports: the repository they are advertising is ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports....
I think I would upgrade if it was a stable release for kubuntu maveric, but the fact that it is backports deters me.

You are right, the best you can get from PPA is Kde 4.5.5. http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3116872.0
