    thinkpad can't view DVD's [SOLVED]

    Hi All,

I have a stock-factory DVD-RW in the bay and a Plextor USB bluray player. I've used both of these to play DVD's in Kubuntu 10.044 about 6 months ago. I've upgraded to 10.10 and I can't play DVD's -- in VLC (favourite) xine, or mplayer.

    VLC complains:

    Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr1'. Check the log for details.

    or

    Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///media/SPARTACUS_S1_D1'. Check the log for details.

I created a log file (RW all groups) and have pointed VLC to it but VLC never writes to it. It's empty.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Typing "mplayer dvdnav://" gives

    MPlayer 1.0rc4-4.4.5 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory
Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control.

    Playing dvdnav://.
    libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 4.1.3
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdnav: Can't read name block. Probably not a DVD-ROM device.
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/user6/.dvdnav/.map'
    libdvdnavVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO failed
    libdvdnavVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed
    libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
libdvdnav: vm: failed to read VIDEO_TS.IFO
    Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd (Input/output error)
No stream found to handle url dvdnav://

    Exiting... (End of file)

    Any ideas??

What's dmesg say when you put the dvd in and try to run it?

      Thanks for that command.

The messages made me look over the disks -- they were bluray but the packaging was not marked very well. Man did I ever goof.

Does anyone make a bluray player for Linux -- either commercial or shareware/freeware? I'm not interested in hacking something together and I'd certainly be willing to pay. It's a pain to reboot into Vista for something we should already have in Linux......

Not that i know of. just like DVD playback it does not have vendor support, and can not be decrypted legaly. keep in mind depending on where you live it might be illegal for you to have libcss2 installed. as it breaks the css encryption on the dvd without the vendor allowing it.something about licsence fees and what not. just some food for thought. if you want it in linux call the ppl who make it and tell them. The only saving grace is that there might be a properiary program todo it in the future.

              It installed without a hitch.

Took about an hour and around 12 gig of disk space to convert a 45 minute bluray movie. While this was not a total deal breaker, it reflects that this tech is probably the wrong direction. When I buy a disk, I just want to pop it in a drive and watch it.

The converted vid produced great sound but the video was sometimes jerky -- sometimes it would simply freeze frame completely while the audio continued. Looks like a pre-alpha product right now.....

Yeah, it looked like a totally new project and I don't have a bluray player, but I thought it was worth looking at.

Since it is a new project - likely the developer would appreciate your input and help with debugging.
