Desktop switching not following pager layout

I use two desktop and have the pager side-by-side on the panel.
Thing is, after some updates instead of sliding left and right, the slide top to bottom.

How on earth do I get it back to side-to-side again?

The options enable me to use different animations. I normally use slide and if I switch to cube it has an option to follow pager layout which normally solves it and it sticks to it after switching back to slide animation.

This time it is being stubborn and simply will not go back to side-to-side sliding no matter what I do.

I had a similar problem with a new installation of Oneiric. Four desktops in a horizontal row in the pager. Going from 4 to 1 the cube would consistently move sideways to 3, then flip vertically to 1. Unchecking "Use pager layout for animation" in Desktop Cube Animation seems to have fixed it. Yes, unchecking.
