I'm having a problem, which others have experienced also, in getting alsamixer to preserve its settings over logout (sometimes) and reboot (always). The recommended solution is sudo alsactl store 0, which saves the current settings in the configuration file /var/lib/alsa/asound.state. The trouble is that these settings are still being reset to some kind of system default during system shutdown (not startup), which I determined by looking at the modification time of the configuration file after rebooting.
I've been trying without success to figure out just how that is happening. Since I haven't succeeded at that, my next step would be to report a bug. But where? The problem isn't in alsactl itself but in that complex nest of files that are called during shutdown and bootup. Who is responsible for those files?
