[Solved] No Sound from Libreoffice Impress

I have found that in both LO 3.3.1 and 3.3.2, a media file inserted into Impress does not play. When I click on the speaker tab which has and "x" on it, there is no change. Also, ppt files with sound are silent. Here my feeling is that, SILENCE IS NOT GOLDEN.

Is this problem experienced by anyone else? A solution would be greatly appreciated as this has been an ongoing problem for me.

See the solution given in my last post. I now have this working on both my 64B Laptop and my 32B Desktop for ppt and Impress files with embedded media.

Hmm, a google search for libreoffice impress no sound yields lots of bug reports and issues. Perhaps you will get a better response by keeping apprised of these bug reports and going to the libreoffice forum.

I think for a lot of Kubuntuers, libreoffice is still pretty new and not widely used.
    Home: Kubuntu 12.04-amd64; Intel i7-860 on Intel DH55PJ; Nvidia 9500GT; 6GB RAM
Network Slave: Xubuntu 11.10-x86; Intel P4-Prescott on MSI; 2GB RAM; Nvidia FX5200
Portable: Xubuntu 11.10-amd64; Asus EeePC 1015PEM

Re: No Sound from Libreoffice Impress

I have reported my problem on the LO Forum but there have been no replies as yet. I thought that LO would have fixed this problem, so I tried installing numerous packages to try to get it to work. I now have sound and video working on Impress with my 64B Laptop . I did not keep a record of what I had installed so I cannot say which one made the difference.

I therefore consider the problem to be one of not having sufficient dependent packages with the installation of Libreoffice. I have a desktop with LO 3.3.2 installed and when I ran my Impress test package on it, it was very slow and the multimedia did not work. The stop button was depressed and clicking on the start button did not change the stop state. To find out what packages are missing I have been searching for differences between the packages of the two systems. So far I have not located the one which makes it work.

I think that when I installed the gstreamer packages (see list below), the startup speed of Impress was considerably faster. I have spent some time trying to track down the missing packages. I just hope that someone else is able to find it. In the meantime I will keep looking as time permits.

[Solved] No Sound from Libreoffice Impress

I now have both audio and video media files inserted into Impress now working to my satisfaction . Also ppt files that were previously silent now have sound . I have found that the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-good is critical. To be on the safe-side, I have installed the gstreamer related packages listed in the attached file which shows the Synaptic listing for "gstreamer" in the search box.

I am not sure who is responsible for packaging Libreoffice, but the relevant gstreamer packages should be included in the dependencies. I have spent countless hours trying to resolve this problem and for the sake of the Linux user community this problem should be fixed without having to resort to this level of detail.

Another small issue that needs attention is the speaker icon which has a red "x" next to it even when it is not muted. It would be great if the "x" was only present when it is muted.
