making sure my system is up to date?

I am having weird problems. Any time I try to change compositing, or enter any of several of the applets in System Settings, KDE just dies, taking all my apps with it, and I have to log back in. Isn't there a command in apt-get which I can run to make sure everything is up to date?

    THANKS!!!!!!!!!

This command should work for you:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade,
also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions
of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and
it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the
expense of less important ones if necessary. The
/etc/apt/sources.list file contains a list of locations from which
to retrieve desired package files. See also apt_preferences(5) for
a mechanism for overriding the general settings for individual
    packages.
The remaining problems you describe should be addressed in a separate thread under a more descriptive subject title.

Re: making sure my system is up to date?

Are you using any non-standard repositories (ppa's)? If 'no', how are you updating normally? i.e., are you using the Notifier to let you know when updates are available and using it to do the upgrades? I don't. I let it tell me when updates are available, but I do all my package maintenance from the command line.

Assuming no non-standard repositories are being used, reboot, and at the KDM Login press Ctrl+Alt+F1. Login. Then type:
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Assuming no errors are reported, when it's done, press Ctrl+Alt+F7 (if that does not return you to the KDM Login screen, press Ctrl+Alt+F8).
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        @Snowhog

Your procedure does not always apply. For instant if you are on a wireless network and you depend on the KDE tools for wireless internet connection.

        But nice guide anyway :-)

        Cheers!
