Who is clobbering my sound settings during bootup?

I've observed that when I restart my system, the sound settings as recorded by alsamixer have been clobbered, and the front sound has been reset to zero. So I crank it back up again. There's supposed to be a fix for this sort of thing: sudo alsactl store. The sound settings are recorded in var/lib/alsa/asound.state. But sure enough, the timestamp on that file after a reboot shows that it's been tampered with during the reboot, and the front sound bumped back down to zero.

How can I find the villain is who's been tampering with that file during the reboot?

Probably not pulseaudio

I've investigated a little more and determined that the resetting is happening during shutdown, not bootup. I didn't realize that at first because I was doing a restart. So whatever is causing the problem has to be in the shutdown sequence. I don't think it's pulseaudio because I don't think there are even any calls on pulseaudio during the shutdown sequence.
