    Re: online tax preparation?

I'd love to see a move away from taxing earnings, to either the FAIR tax, or all the way to a VAT. Imagine a system where a tax is added on to every purchase of non-food goods and services, and there's nothing for the individual citizen to file, ever. Tens of thousands of lawyers and tax accountants would be against it, of course .....

      Hi...

I would have to quote GreyGeek from an earlier thread and post: "Them's fightin' words" to an Oregonian (where I live....no sales tax.)

Seriously, before I would consider any kind of tax of this nature, both income and property taxes of any and every kind and on all levels would have to eliminated and any future consideration of these taxes prohibited by amendments placed in both the federal and state constitutions. Large and medium sized corporations would still be required to pay an income tax unless they agreed to pay all their employees a family or union wage with decent benefits.

So if I understood right, FireFox will work fine to file with TurboTax?

I completed my data entry into TaxComplete's forms, except for their 1099-INT form, which did not have a textbox in which to put the Federal Id Number of the bank. Their error trapper caught the fact that the FIN was not on the form but didn't notice that there was no place for it. I discovered this three minutes after their 8AM-8PM chat line closed. This morning I chatted with "Mary G", who was very apologetic, and said that the corrected form should be up by Saturday, but it "could" be up this afternoon. It wasn't. If it isn't up by Noon tomorrow I am going to use another service, perhaps TaxSlayer.

                  Re: online tax preparation?

Either the FAIR tax or a VAT would be nice. The big problem is, of course, that the politicians wouldn't be able to hide tax increases from the sheep. Most people are used to having their taxes deducted from their pay and think only in terms of their "take home" pay. A dollar here or there taken as a tax hike from their take home doesn't feel like much. IF they got to take home their ENTIRE pay, no income, FICA, state or local taxes withheld, and come April 15th they had to write one check to pay them all off, they'd explode in rage.

The VAT tax could be progressive, with those being able to afford luxury cars, yachts and such carrying a larger share, and no tax on basic food, clothes, medicine and medical treatment. Like Buffet said, it is disgraceful that he, who makes millions a year, pays less tax than his $45K/year secretary.

                    Yup. I did it.

My federal return is held up because the IRS isn't accepting returns with itemized deductions until Feb 14 but state went through just fine. City I have to do by snail mail but TT provided the forms and filled them out.

This makes the third year I've done TT with FF under Linux. No issues at all.
we see things not as they are, but as we are.

                      Re: online tax preparation?

Last night, around 11PM CST, I checked in at CompleteTax and saw that they had fixed their 1099-INT form, so I completed my e-file. This morning I got an email from them saying that the IRS had accepted my filing.

Thank you kindly for the correction, sir.

I am about to embark upon the wonderful task of filing my taxes, because I have cleaning I should be doing, and I really really do not want to do it. (Really should though, as soon as I file I will clean, promise!)

I intend to go back with H&R Block's free online efile. As I mentioned in the other thread, I believe last year I had to do it through konqueror by changing my browser string, but I didn't have Chromium last year, so I shall see how that goes.

I'll report back once I make it to the other side. Wish me luck!

                            Re: online tax preparation?

So, here's the skinny so far:

                            I filed using Chromium 8.0.552.237 (70801) under Kubuntu 10.10.

                            Federal Return
Used H&R Block again, appeared to go swimmingly. The only snafus I've encountered so far are the "Your browser/OS is not supported, do you want to continue anyways?!" scary warning page at the beginning, and their feedback form being a load of rubbish, with it refusing to let me type more than a dozen or so characters in a field that was supposed to take at least a couple hundred. Very annoying.

Last year, I remember having to use Konqueror for some reason, but as I said in my last post, I didn't have Chromium last year. Once I clicked the continue anyway link on the warning page, there were no problems until I reached the feedback form, from which I intended to politely tell them their site works under Linux/Chromium, but alas, foiled by their broken feedback form.

I have to wait for them to tell me the return has been submitted to the Feds, and I'll check back in once that's all said and done to tell everyone how that finishes out.

                            State Return
As usual, the California Franchise Tax Board was a breath of fresh air. If any of your are filing state taxes for California, jump on their CalFile program. It works great, it's free and it seems that most people qualify to use it. Like most government entities, the site looks absolutely horrible and like it came out of the 90s, but it works and it's free. It doesn't discriminate based upon OS and/or web browser, and it's easy to use.

I zipped through it, printed a copy for my records and got everything submitted and completed today. <3 it.

Kleon? *raises eyebrow* The phrase is in Klingon, and it is demanding to know where the chocolate is.

I do not recall if I have a Klingon font or not, but there is still hot debate within the Klingon speaking community on how the Klingon characters map against the latin alphabet that most people have learned the language using.

I already posted about the bad news that Colorado E-File now requires Silverlight. Now for the good news, I filed my son's Colorado return Tuesday, he received his refund, direct deposit today. Now that's fast.
