Help trying to upgrade from Kubuntu-ppa

Ok, I tried updating a few days ago from the kubuntu-ppa and it left me crippled! I had to remove all my kde stuff and disable the ppa, create a /etc/init/kdm.conf file and finish removing kdm, then re-install kubuntu-desktop. It was a major problem. So I would like to upgrade to the 4.5.6? I think or latest edition, but I'm still having problems. I'm not sure what those problems are. I re-enabled the repo, updated and then tried this:

Wow guess I found the limit to post size. Any rate, I didn't upgrade, I'm waiting if anyone has any ideas or thoughts I would appreciate the help. I'm not sure what the hang up is. I originally had Gnome installed, and then installed kubuntu-desktop, and made kdm main thing.

Some clarification first. From the output, you're running on KDE 4.5.1. Is that correct?

In Software Sources > Updates tab, Kubuntu updates, all four items should be checked, and under Automatic updates, Check for updates set to Daily and Only notifiy about available updates checked. These last two items are personal preferences only. The four items in Kubuntu updates being checked is important.

In the Other Software tab, ensure that you have no special PPAs or other third-party repositories checked. It's here that you should have added the kubuntu-ppa repository.

I personally use apt-get, but aptitude should present no problems. However, after verifying the settings above are as I've outlined, close Software Sources and open a console and type:

sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get clean && sudo updatedb && sudo apt-get update && sudo-apt-get dist-upgrade --simulate

Look at the output of the simulated dist-upgrade and see how it compares to the aptitude full-upgrade you ran.

Thank you for that! I do have 4.5.1 the standard Kubuntu release. I disabled my other ppa repos, and using apt-get dist-upgrade seems better. I only ran the simulate as you specified. I think I may run the full thing here is what the output was:

Looks better. I usually use apt-get too, however things didn't work the first time around when I did that and I was advised to use aptitude. I didn't realize that apt-get had dist-upgrade, or I forgot about that. Thanks a bundle for that guide. I think I'm going to run it and will let you know how it goes.

Not a joke, but you are correct, updatedb is for locate. It didn't need to be included in the commands.

Thanks for the help! I wasn't able to get it sorted out. I had too many modifications made to my system. So I just opted to re-install. Appreciate the effort though.

That is definitely a problem when it comes to an upgrade. If you have packages installed that were from outside the normal packaging repository structure, you can find your self in 'dependency hell' later on.
