Trouble Mounting CD

Just had a roll of film developed at CVS and got the usual negatives and CD only - no prints.

Got home and the CD would not mount under Kubuntu. As far as Kubuntu is concerned, there is no CD in the drive.

Rebooted into Vista and the CD and contents display okay.

I have been getting the CDs from CVS for quite a few years and this is the first time the CD has never mounted under Kubuntu. Of course that was versions prior to 10.10.

I tried mounting a previous picture CD from CVS that I have mounted with no problem under previous versions of Kubuntu. It would not mount either.

So it appears that the ability to mount some CDs under Kubuntu 10.10 is now broken.

The list of problems with 10.10 is growing - it will not shutdown and will not mount some CDs.

Maybe it's time for me to re-install 10.04 since 10.10 seems to be broken for me.

Did some more investigating.

• booted with older kernal - still would not mount the CVS or Kodak picture CD, even the ones which previous versions of Kubuntu mounted no problem
• ran the 10.10 LiveCD - same problem would not mount the picture CD. Did mount other CDs though

So, it is probably not a kernal problem, but a Kubuntu problem.

There have been challenges, over the years, as Linux (and the hardware technology) have evolved, for optical drives. You need to narrow down "it doesn't work" to something a little more concrete:

- IDE or SATA optical drive?
- all CDs don't play, or just some CDs?
- KDE desktop has a problem or other (Gnome, XFCE) Linux desktops have the same problem?
- *buntu kernels have the problem, or other Linux kernels have the problem?


The hwinfo package is a good one to learn more about your hardware.

lsmod

shows the loaded kernel modules. "ata_piix" is the module that runs my Asus IDE optical drive, for example.

I don't really know how else to describe the problem. Normally when I insert a CD/DVD into the drive, it whirls for some seconds and then Kubuntu pops up a window that I have 1 or more choices of what to do. Normally I just list the contents with Dolphin and proceed from there. With the picture CDs - nothing happens - nothing. I assume the optical drive is read since the light on the front panel of the drive blinks to indicate such, but Kubuntu takes no action whatsoever or displays anything to indicate that the CD is available to do something with it.. If I search for the drive under the appropriate "media" directory, it's simply not there. If I look in fstab, nothing is listed. If I run Kdiskfree, no optical drive is listed. It is as if for Kubuntu, theCD simply does not exist.

I have no means of testing to find out - Kubuntu is the only Linux desktop I run. Installing all of the others would require more resources in computers and time than I have - sorry

I have tried both of the kernals listed when I boot 10.10 and both exhibit the same problem. I booted the 10.10 LiveCD and it had the same problem (don't know which kernal it uses, but I assume the latest listed when I boot 10.10

I really do not have the time or resources to install and configure and test multiple Linux distributions.

Not obvious to me which module controls the optical drives. lsmod was run with a CD in both optical drives just to make sure that any module that should be loaded was - the CDs in both drives were mounted and I could display the contents under Dolphin for both. As I wrote, only the CVS and Kodak picture CDs seem to have the problem so far. The CDs mounted under previous Kubuntu versions so I know that the CDs are OK. Also, the CDs mount when I boot into Windows Vista (which I would rather avoid if at all humanly possible).
