    "checksums do not match"

    Hi Y'all,
New here, but a veteran at both Linux (>10yrs) and Kubuntu (~5yrs).
I'm trying to install a new Kubuntu on my desktop, and it fails on several occasions.
Here's what I did so far:
    1. tried
    - Kubuntu 10.04 64bit (my preference)
    - Kubuntu 10.04 32bit
    - Kubuntu 10.10 64bit
    - Kubuntu 10.10 32bit
    2. all of the above on CD (some on more than one), and later, when the stack of coasters got a bit too big, on USB-bootables using unetbootin

    Here's what happens:
    1. installation preferences is excruciatingly slow (at least five minutes for the step between time zone and keyboard for instance)
    2. if and when installation finally starts, it runs to a random percentage before stopping with an input/output error (the reason why I tried several CD's before changing to USB)

After two and a half weeks of trying, I finally downloaded Ubuntu 10.10, started it and installed it within fifteen minutes. Damn!!!
Using Ubuntu, I tried making another USB-bootable from a fresh download using the Ubuntu-tool (see website HOWTO). And finally I got something to work with: error "Checksums do not match. Retry?"
I retried several times, but the checksum seems to be the problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Greets,
    801.

    Re: "checksums do not match"

Where did you get the Kubuntu 10.10 .iso file from? It is imperative that the md5sum of the download matches that provided. If it doesn't, then the download didn't complete 'error free' and using it to burn the LiveCD is pointless.

Get the appropriate .iso from Kubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat)
    The md5sums are:
    Code:
    980692e2221c447b4145d974fc54156e *kubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64.iso
    1b91f564bf817d989d5d86f0a20c4949 *kubuntu-10.10-alternate-i386.iso
    760c15562bdffba54f23852a5d47db4e *kubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64.iso
    da50a1ddb22060a2abda6823c9d1148d *kubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso
Verify the download against the correct one above. If they match, then burn the .iso to a good CD - don't use 'cheap' brands, as you'll just make a lot of coffee coasters.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

      Couple of ideas for you:

      1. Cheap 'n sleazy -- go with the Ubuntu installation, since it's so happy to go that way, then install the kubuntu-desktop package, and when you log in the next time, just choose the KDE login menu item on the greeter. Just pretend all the orangey stuff isn't really there.

      2. OK, to actually deal with the issue:

Look at FAQ #1 in my signature. It could be the ISO file, it could be the burn process, it could be the blank media -- heck it could be the phase of the moon. If you can use either a different PC to do the burning, or a different brand of blank media, you'll probably get past the problem.

      and check this: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...5232#msg195232

And no, I cannot explain why a Ubuntu ISO/CD would happily work where a Kubuntu one will not. :P

@Snowhog: I downloaded the iso's (all of them) from the official site Kubuntu.org. Some of them several times. Because I started to use up a lot of CDs I chose to use USB instead. Same problem.

@dibl: 1. Yeah, I know, but you know...
I tried and it seemed to work fine, until I tried to go online with KDE. No go, and the System Tools > Networking doesn't even have a setup tool! When I logged into Gnome the settings where fine. So I really would prefer Kubuntu (10.04, because of LTS).

Down the list of FAQs is one on networking -- Detonate wrote a good how-to on ethernet networking, and then if your problem is wireless, well ... there are probably too many solutions, actually. But your best bet is to find the guide on how to strip knetwork manager and it's related packages out, and then install wicd. But review the guides and give knetwork manager a chance, before you nuke it -- many report they get it working after they twiddle it awhile.

OK dibl, will do. Thanks for helping. I'll post in here wether it helped or not.

              However...
I noticed, while scrolling through one of your links, that the CDs have a "check CD for errors" option on bootscreen.
I did just that, and lo... three of them (50%) checked out fine. I double-checked one of those, still OK.
So before considering the workaround, I still would like to know why these reportedly fine CDs (and possibly the 8+ USBs as well) do not work while one single Ubuntu-USB worked fine. And how to get them working, obviously.

                Re: "checksums do not match"

I have personally experienced one case where the "Check CD for Errors" routine told me a lie -- it said my CD was good, but it turned out not to be.

You need to understand the difference between audio CDs, which provide an analog reproduction from digital input, and a CD that installs an operating system. An audio CD can have many bit errors, and your ear will not detect it -- it sounds fine. So you can burn audio CDs at 52X or whatever your optical drive will support, and the result is hunky-dory. An OS installation has to be 100.000% perfect, bit for bit. No bit errors whatever. That's why we say set the burn speed down to the slowest that your software permits, and use the best blank media you can get your hands on.

                  Re: "checksums do not match"

                  But what about the Ubuntu?
Just to prove a point, I repartitioned, reformatted a USB, and made a bootable iso on it using the same methods as before, that is to say unetbootin. Eight minutes later (that's right) I had Ubuntu running on my desktop.

                  So:
                  Ubuntu
                  tries: 2
                  success: 2

                  Kubuntu
                  tries: 15
                  success: none

Seems to me my bits are fine and 100,000% perfect, and the Kubuntu installer is *****

                    success: one

Yeah well, you what is said: the stubborn shall inherit the earth.
Took three more tries with a checksummed and verified disk, and still the thing kept on whining about missing this and not verified that.
                    Until 18th try, that is.

                    Thanks for helping anyway.

I call it "persistence" -- sounds more like a virtue that way. And yes, it comes in very handy at times.

                        Thanks

Not that I'm happy about this, mind you. I need to do this on another desktop, two laptops and hopefully a netbook as well. Eighteen installs to get one right, times nearly an hour, times five... not happy at all...

I still have a few more questions though. Obviously, since I'm typing this on the machine mentioned above, this should be in post-install and 10.04 at that. Just say so and I will go over there.
If it's OK in here then here we go:

I can't seem to find Kcontrol, I want to use it to make Konqueror my standard file manager instead of Dolphin.
Plus I can't get Firefox to install, says something about not configurated or something like that.
                        Any ideas?

                          Re: "checksums do not match"

Hmmmm -- let me guess -- you remember kcontrol from KDE 3.5? It is not a member of the KDE 4 suite of stuff -- sorry.

While I'm a happy Dolphin user, if you want Konqueror for your file manager, why don't you put it on your panel, so it's handy to launch when you want to go file-browsing? I'm not sure there's a "default" issue -- it's just a question of what you launch, I think. So, if you click the Cashew and unlock the widgets, then Kmenu > Internet > Konqueror, and right-click it and "Add to Panel". Then don't forget to lock the widgets again.

I don't know about Firefox -- I converted to chromium-browser a year ago and so someone else will have to give you guidance. If you want to start a thread on that problem in the "Software" sub-forum, and post the output that you get from the terminal when you do

                          Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firefox
I'm sure someone will know what's wrong.

                            Hi Dibl,
                            thanks again for answering.

                            1. Ehm, yes. I migrated from K8.04, the previous LTS. Still using it on all other machines mentioned above, and thought it time to move on. I have my home directory as a link on my desktop, along with some others, always within reach, and when I click that I want it to open in Konqueror, not Dolphin. Kcontrol helped me with that. I don't like Dolphin because it doesn't show trees like button F9 will in Konqueror.

                            2. OK, will try that code first and take action later. I tried to install Firefox with the installer, and when that failed with Synaptic. Both no go. Although I said I was a veteran (I am, honestly!) I'm a bit rusty at Konsole-coding. Used to do that a lot years ago, but the GUIs became much better since then.

Thanks anyway. Consider this topic closed, though not solved.

OK, on your Question #1, here's something, except I'm seeing it on 11.04, so I'm not sure it's exactly the same for 10.04.

KMenu > System Settings > under "Workspace Appearance and Behavior" there is a Default Applications item. In that one, there's a listing for File Manager so you click it and a bulleted list is available -- you'll need to choose "Other" and then browse to Konqueror's executable, I think.
