Ubuntu or Kubuntu?

I've always thought that I'm running Kubuntu and not Ubuntu. The initial banners indicate that I am. But:

pwa@pwa-K60IJ:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release 
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=maverick
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.10"

Is the fact that lsb-release indicates Ubuntu just an artifact or does it indicate some inconsistency with my configuration?

Whether Ubuntu or Kubuntu (or any *buntu), the OS is Ubuntu. There is no "Kubuntu" kernel. It's the desktop environment one chooses to use/install that makes it (U)buntu, (K)ubuntu, (X)ubuntu, ...
