E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code when installing updates.

    Hi,
Before I get told to search, I did search for past posts but nothing really helped.
Therefore I am pasting my error msg here hopefully to get some insights.

    Thanks!

    Does
    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    yield any results?

I also noticed that the installation or updates will crash at the file gconf2. Seems like there is some problem overcoming the file.

Re: E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code when installing updates.

          What I would try:

          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install -f
          sudo dpkg --configure -a

          If that doesn't work, then:
          sudo apt-get install --reinstall python-central
          If that doesn't work, then:
          sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-central

If this is really obstinate, you may need to manually download the python-central package and install it manually with dpkg.

You may need to repeat these steps with python-numpy.

What you really need to do is a dist-upgrade rather than upgrade. dist-upgrade doesn't do what you think -- it allows the system to install newer versions of the programs already on it. I suspect you have mixed python packages that are giving you trouble.

You may need to repeat these steps with python-numpy.

What you really need to do is a dist-upgrade rather than upgrade. dist-upgrade doesn't do what you think -- it allows the system to install newer versions of the programs already on it. I suspect you have mixed python packages that are giving you trouble.

To be honest, I have both python 2.6 and python 3.1 installed. Is it the main cause of the problem? If so, I should remove python 2.6 right.

Usually, different versions of python coexist without problems. On my system, it looks like I have several versions in /usr/lib. I still think getting your system to where you can run a dist-upgrade might help to sort those problems out.

You could try removing one or more python versions, but be careful, pay close attention to what will be removed along with them before you hit the OK button. I have a feeling it might just remove all or most of kde along with it.

Hi, I tried removing python 2.6 but the problems still occurs. Something, somewhere is corrupted. How do I run a dist upgrade?
I know reformatting my kubuntu will solve the problem but doing that I will have to reinstall my programs which will be a tedious process. I hope to avoid that.

                            What do you get with

                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get -f install
                            ?

                              sudo apt-get install -f
                              sudo dpkg --configure -a

                              If that doesn't work, then:
                              sudo apt-get install --reinstall python-central
                              If that doesn't work, then:
                              sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-central

If this is really obstinate, you may need to manually download the python-central package and install it manually with dpkg.

You may need to repeat these steps with python-numpy.
Did you ever try these directions?
