[INSOLVABLE] Can't unmute sound - Kubuntu freezes

    Hello!

I did a fresh install from Kubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. Before installation I did this "error check" thing and no errors were found. Installation went smoothly and everything seemed fine. By default, sound is muted. When I try to unmute it, Kubuntu freezes. I've tried to unmute in KMix, pavucontrol (I thought, maybe the problem is in KMix..) and I also tried keyboard shortcuts. It still freezes. Then I installed Kubuntu again, but the problem is still here.

    Help, please..?

    Thank you!

Everytime I have an issue with my sound (always been a Kubuntu user ) I start alsamixer in an terminal to see if there is something muted or not. It might apply here?!

right click on the kmix icon and be sure you have the correct master channel (sometimes its named wrong) . if that don't work for you output of the command lspci or the multimedia section of lshw would be helpful to see what device you have. you might only have one. you might have two or five. i have found pulse likes to use hdmi as default out a lot of the time sometimes that can be an issue.

Well.. I don't know what to look (don't know much about computers...), but the lshw gave this:
        *-multimedia
        description: Audio device
product: 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
        vendor: Intel Corporation
        physical id: 1b
        bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0
        version: 04
        width: 64 bits
        clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
        configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0
        resources: irq:16 memory:d0180000-d0183fff

KMix showed one device - Internal Audio Analog Stereo.

I started alsamixer in terminal, too. Scrolled everything to maximum - nothing Then pressed "M" (to unmute) - Kubuntu crashed again. Nice.

I also tried Kubuntu without installing (this option on the CD) and the same problem occurred there, so maybe I should burn a new Kubuntu-CD and install it again..?

Have you checked "Device Preference" in the "MultiMedia" section of System Settings? I'm not 100% on this, but that may make a difference.

Try a different 'backend.' I had earlier issues with sound which were resolved by installing phonon-backend-xine (I have a laptop with an Intel HDA sound chip as well, although different than yours).
            Description: Phonon Xine 1.1.x backend
Phonon is the Qt 4 multimedia API, which provides a task-oriented abstraction
layer for capturing, mixing, processing, and playing audio and video content.
            .
This package contains the Xine 1.1.x backend for Phonon.

There's nothing I can do in Multimedia -> Device Preference...
              And I already have phonon-backend-xine.

And as I just discovered that restart option doesn't work, I'll burn a new CD tomorrow, install Kubuntu again and hope it'll work then

But thanks for trying to help

Re: [INSOLVABLE] Can't unmute sound - Kubuntu freezes

These instructions are old, but maybe you can get some ideas. In particular, you might be able to upgrade alsa to a newer version?

Also, I recently bought a usb sound card on Amazon, I think it was about USD $2. I am not sure if you can get these, depending where you live, but sometimes an ultra-cheap gadget can get you going until the dust settles ...

                  Good luck!

Thanks! Right now I'm back to Kubuntu 10.04, but when I have time, I give 10.10 another try and let's see if these instructions help
