Re: Thanks to thast stupid Meerkat my system is FUBAR!

Well sir, I tried both of your suggestions, neither of which did any good. I'm backing up all of my files onto an external HD and plan on reinstalling the whole system, do you have any suggestions on how I should proceed with uninstalling linux and reinstalling Kubuntu from a jump drive? I know all about modifying my BIOS, wiping my disks should be something I should be able to do from the BIOS correct? If you have any info on a good link to this process, please let me know. I just foresee a clean installation as the least troublesome and most effective choice at the moment.

    Thanks for your help.

I'm assuming you are not dual-booting or anything?

To install from a jump drive I imagine you simply need to configure your computer to boot from USB. I am assuming you already have the installation image properly set up on the USB Drive.

If you plan on wiping everything, the default installation option is to use the entire disk so the process will do that for you.

I can't see where you have said whether you have a separate partition for home but it's an option you can take at the partitioning stage.

The official ubuntu installation guide is here

      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

Obviously with kubuntu the appearance will be different but the process will be the same.

Well sir, I was unaware that I could partition the home, what good does partitioning do? I've reinstalled Karmic, and am now in the middle of upgrading to Lucid. If partitioning does anything to improve performance, then I suppose I will learn how to do that post upgrade, I'm also going to wait till meerkat gets LTS, which will probably be next year, yes?

Thanks for trying to help, guess I shouldn't try and get into water that's deeper than what I know how to swim in.

          you should read this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition

it's a little late now but you should understand it

a basic good scheme for a desktop (personal computer) with just linux would be 3-4 partitions .
          1 primary of 12-20Gig formated ext3-4 for /
1 extended taking the rest of the space
1 swap partition within the extended of 2Gig
1 partition for /home within the extended taking up the rest of the space formated ext3-4.....or if sufficient space 1 more for storage/backups

I agree with Vinny that with the issues you have had recently, if you now have a system that works to your satisfaction it's best to stick with it (unless and until you get the itch of course )

If you have a separate home partition it enables you to reinstall/upgrade or even move distros (within reason) without disturbing your data or settings. The easiest time to do this is during the install. Also, as Vinny says a separate swap partition is a good idea (don't know why 'buntu doesn't set this up by default - perhaps they are just trying to make things as easy as possible). It can be very helpful to a laptop user for example who might want to hibernate the machine.

The last LTS version is 10.04. The next will be 12.04 I think, 10.10 (Meerkat) will never be LTS as it will only ever have 18 months of official support.

If you decide you want to take any of the steps Vinny and I have referred to, don't hesitate to come back for assistance.

Ya know what guys, I'm feeling brave lol.

I'm going to create a Live USB of 10.10, this is going to be going on a desktop, not a laptop, so what are the procedures I need to go through to properly install 10.10 on my pc with partitions?

Re: Thanks to thast stupid Meerkat my system is FUBAR!

make your live USB .......test it out on the box your going to install on.

if all is running to your satisfaction let us know the size of the hard drive or drives if more than 1
and we will go from there.

and install gparted on the USB if you gave it persistence .....or DL the gparted livecd.

it will be easer to do the partitioning work with gparted than the installer.

Re: Thanks to thast stupid Meerkat my system is FUBAR!

Well for some reason the usb I made takes forever and a day to load (in fact it never went past the loading screen) when I try to boot 10.10 from the usb just to try it out, so I'm going to make a live cd. I'm going to take your 4 partitions advice, so what's the best way of doing that?

Re: Thanks to thast stupid Meerkat my system is FUBAR!

make a Gparted livecd or parted magic livecd ....it boot's a GUI that is easy to understand and makes it easy to partition your drives.

                    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php

                    or

                    http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=screenshots

use 1 of these to partition the drive as kneaded then when installing Kubuntu at the chosing whar to install part chose manuall ....then pick the first partition... click change.... now you can set the file system type and set the mount points.
                    repeat for each partition .

make shure the boot loader (grub) is going to /sda (assumeing that /sda is the drive your working with ((/sda1,sda2,sda3)) ) and continue .

                    best of luck
