Desktop effects disabled every logon/login [SOLVED]

For some reason my desktop effects are disabled by default after every reboot. Also when I try to turn them on It says, "Desktop effects have been suspended by another application" This Kubuntu is a fresh Install with no dual booting. Is there a way for desktop effects to be on every time I reboot? Also I have an ATI 4670 Graphics Card, (Not sure if that matters.) I also noticed I can navigate to "Additional Drivers" and Install the Proprietary Driver, but even after I reboot, the desktop effects are disabled by default. Not really sure what to do as my effects are choppy and slow. I came to KDE specifically because I love Eye Candy and desktop effects. I must fix this. It is a matter of life and death for me. Any help would be appreciated.

        Re: Desktop effects disabled

I read 2 different post giving me a few options.

1st option: Edit the "/.kde/share/config/kwinrc" File and manually remove it from the blacklist, resulting in better graphics. This option I would like to try, to give me better experience working with Linux. However Even finding that file I wouldn't know where to begin. Also open GL better than Xrender.

2nd option: Disabling functionality checks should fix and retain the graphics when turned on, even after rebooting. This I can figure out.

Is there one option better than the other? Are these two methods going to accomplish the same task? If so option 2 I can definitely accomplish myself. If I attempt the 1st option I will need further assistance. BTW thanks for the suggestions/solutions as well as links.

          Re: Desktop effects disabled

Your home directory, typically located at /home/<username>/ is also known as ~/

In that directory is a hidden directory called .kde

          From there, go to share/config/

In that directory is a file called kwinrc. Edit this file using Kate or an editor of your choice and remove the lines that list your video card. Save and restart.

Alternatively, using the command line (Konsole), type in

          Code:
          vim ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc
and use dd to remove the line. If you're not familiar with vim, then just use the gui method.

            Re: Desktop effects disabled

Just before you posted this, I was reading through some posts and I disabled vsync. I was told it increases Radeon graphics. After I did this my desktop restarted and now when I go to "Desktop Effects" the [All Effects] & [Advanced] Tabs are blacked out and I can no longer access them. How can I revert back to my previous settings? Sorry for the lame attempt to obtain better looking graphics. Thanks again Jeremy.

You will need to edit kwinrc and remove the blacklisted devices.

                Re: Desktop effects disabled

I just checked the blacklist devices and my video card isn't even listed within the "Blacklist." Do I still need to do anything? Also how Can I regain access to the "Desktop Effects" once more?

                *UPDATE*
Re-installed Kubuntu. Simple fix by navigating to, System Settings>Desktop Effects>[Advanced Tab]> 'Checked' "Disable functionality checks." I then proceeded to install the proprietary driver for my ATI Graphics card, rebooted and Desktop Effects changes were retained Thanks for all you're help guys!
