    Error Message "Too Many Connections"

Trying to install Kubuntu or Ubuntu 10.10 (32/64 bit) from the Live CD, the message "Too Many Connections" appears and the system freezes, before you have a chance to install it to your HD. After a few more attempts, the o/s finally installs, despite the error message. On reboot, the same message appears and the system dies... Flashed the BIOS, the Chipset, changed drives, googled a lot, but to no avail...

Is it possible that some AMD platforms (or the particular mobo) is incompatible? Nevertheless, Kubuntu 10.10 installed OK on my Intel-based PC, my old laptop, even my netbook...

Mobo is Gigabyte GA-890XA UD3 rev. 2.0, Phenom II X6 1090T CPU, 8 GB of Corsair DD3 1600 RAM, OCD Vertex 2 60GB SATA II SSD, Sapphire ATI 6850 Graphics Card.

    PLEASE HELP...

I doubt the trouble is an incompatibility. Have you tried 10.04.1 instead of 10.10?

Assuming it works, you'd be able to upgrade if you still felt bleeding edge is necessary...

Re: Error Message "Too Many Connections"

It seems that the problem appears when ATI drivers are installed; the system then freezes on reboot. The 6850 card must not be ok with available linux drivers. Otherwise, both Kubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 versions, can finally install and run at 1280x1024. The sound is off with 10.04, though. Anyway, thanks a lot, a few more ideas will be appreciated.

Re: Error Message "Too Many Connections"

I went over to the ubuntu forums and it seems that ati hasn't released a driver compatible with that card yet.

You should be able to force the vesa driver and get through the install successfully. I think you just add xforcevesa to the kernel boot line.

You won't be able to get desktop effects or have much video response until a correct driver is available...

Yes. You're absolutely right. ATI Linux support is available only up to 5xxx cards. I just hope they come up soon with 6xxx support as well.
So, no defective mobo, no SATA3/USB3 or SSD issue. Just the ATI drivers. Phew! I've almost missed a bbq trying to sort this out. I think I'll try the vesa solution for a change. Thanks again...

Dude, BBQ ALWAYS trumps computer issues, especially if there's beer included...
