    Occassional Boot to Black Screen

I started using Kubuntu 10.10 a few weeks ago, and I've run into an annoying problem. One out of every 4 or 5 boots fails when KDE starts. That is, instead of seeing the KDE splash, I get nothing but an empty screen.

Here's what happens: The awesome Kubuntu bootsplash appears and does its thing, the screen goes black, and right when you expect KDM to start the computer essentially locks up like a student who can't remember how to solve an exam question. My hard disk goes quiet, and I can't switch to a TTY, but the power button works and will start the shutdown sequence when pressed.

The only changes I've made to KDM are automatic login for a specific user and the theme. I resorted to suspending my computer instead of shutting it down so I won't run into this problem (though I have had issues with suspend-to-RAM not working every time, but that's a different story). Is there any way I can make it so my computer starts up completely and consistently? My laptop is fully up-to-date and I'm using KDE 4.5.4 from the Updates PPA. Thanks!

On the kernel boot line in the grub menu, you need to (for now) delete the "quiet" and "splash" options, so you can see exactly where in the boot process the system is stopping.

No, this is no help for you, except that I have exactly the same.
I use Ctrl+Alt+Del here to shutdown properly. And I have it on both my kubuntu boxen of very different hardware. So I think everyone has it, only the reports are not there yet.

After 5 days, I haven't had a single failure. Of course, when I enabled the splash screen again the problem happened on the first boot. I'll take out the options again and check for a bug report. At least now I can reliably start my laptop

FYI, I just posted this: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3115067.0

Probably unrelated, but just in case. You're not dual-booting, are you?

No, this is the only OS I have installed.
