    Login screen frozen when running on battery

    I have just upgraded to 10.10 and noticed something weird. Sometimes when I powered on, it would boot up, and when it got the the username / password screen all input was frozen. Pressing the power button didn't offer the shutdown options menu.

    All I could do was power off by holding the power button down for 10 seconds.

    The only way I can have a useable login screen is by having the power connected. I am fine to run on battery once logged in.

    This occurs even with a decent amount of charge left (i.e. still happens at nearly 100%).

    That is weird -- I don't recall ever seeing this particular problem. It might be helpful to see the details of your hardware, as output by

    Code:
    lspci -v
    and

    NO, in all likelihood you can restart it with Alt-SysRq R-S-E-I-U-B, and preserve your fileystem's integrity.

    That's odd. It sounds like it is related to the powerdevil settings. Try going into System Settings > Power Management, and changing the default to "Powersave", for both of the first two settings. (Default is for the AC power setting to be "Performance" and the "On Battery" setting to be "Powersave"). Then reboot the system (on battery) and see if there's a change. If there's no improvement, change both of those settings to "Performance" and then see what you get.

    Also, you probably would be wise to fsck the root filesystem partition, at this point -- use a Live CD or booted USB stick.

          That is very new hardware.

          I still suspect a power management issue, and possibly the nouveau driver is not able to handle all the power management features of the Nvidia GF310M. I don't know -- I don't have access to that chip. If you don't mind risking an experiment, you could go into System > Additional Drivers and enable the proprietary Nvidia driver. I cannot guarantee any improvement -- it could get worse, or no better. Best to back up your data first, of course. Note that after you click the "accept" (or whatever) button to enable the proprietary driver, there is a lengthy process of downloading in the background, so you must be very patient for as long as 5 minutes, depending on your Internet connection bandwidth.

            I have tried installing the Nvidia-current and blacklisting nouvea before. All I got was a failing x and fell back to tty login. Googling this it seems the latest nvidia drivers "dropped support" for the 310m, although this may be an accidental regression.

              That's for a Sony Vaio, but the basic procedure might work for your laptop as well.
