    Re: epson nx515

    harlan@user-KJ384AA-ABA-SR5410F:~$ sudo rm -rf /home/harlan/etc/
    [sudo] password for harlan:
    harlan@user-KJ384AA-ABA-SR5410F:~$ sudo rm -rf /home/harlan/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
    harlan@user-KJ384AA-ABA-SR5410F:~$ 63080
    63080: command not found
    harlan@user-KJ384AA-ABA-SR5410F:~$

I guess I shouldn't copy it back to it's original locale?

Boy, I don't know where you vets find the patience to help us newbies!
So now I'm using File Manager to find /etc/sane.d/dll.conf, and it can't locate it anywhere.

        Re: epson nx515

those files you are looking at are for the printer, not the scanner so ignore that you need to look for the iscan bits

        go here
        http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do
select your model, and answer the questions at the bottom.

on the next page you need to scroll down to the scanners area and download the deb file foe each of these sections:

        data package
network plugin (if yours is wireless or network capable)
        core package

you will need to select the correct deb version, depending on if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit system

once downloaded, you simply need to click on them to install (one at a time), start with the iscan-data-xxxxx
then the iscan-core-xxxx, then the iscan-plugin-xxx if you need the wireless/networking

Too late for that if you moved the file form its original location somehow. Even of you saved the file from kate to a different spot (home/harlan/etc/sane.d), it shouldn't have deleted the original file at /etc/sane.d

I don't understand how it got moved to /home/harlan/etc/sane.d

if you browse to /etc/sane.d/ and don't see a dll.conf in that dir, you can get it back by reinstalling sane
          Code:
          sudo apt-get install --reinstall sane

Actually, it appears to have saved it to a partition, under /media/etc. When i hit save, I assumed it would save it in it's original location. I took another snapshot, but now my upload tool on Box.net appears to have stalled.
I downloaded a printer package on the page you sent me, and it installed, but still no scanner. So i need to edit and save that config file again, let you know.

OK...I restored the sane directory, moved the hash to epson 2, saved it in the same place at root/etc. Restarted the PC, and tried those 3 scan programs again, still no luck.
I was trying to find those different core packages you were referring to install one at a time. All I found was this
              http://www.box.net/shared/static/5ua1kagsv6.png
Installed it, and now my printer is properly named, but still no scanner. Did I miss the packages you were referring to?

naw, it wasn't patience, I just went to bed is all

glad you got it sorted. That site is rather complex and confusing, to say the least.

all of us, no matter how long we have used linux , have been in similar shoes. giving that help we got back is one way of 'paying' for the free/libre software we use
