    Can anyone access Windows Shares?

Can anyone access Windows shares from 10.10? This might be a bug as I've seen several mentions but no fix.

I've tried accessing Windows shares on various Win boxes and FreeNAS without success.
I've tried this with Ubuntu & Kubuntu on both physical and virtual (VM Guest) systems.
The symptoms are the same, the 10.10 system can't see the several Windows shares that exist on the network.

The symptoms seem to be at the SAMBA layer not the network as I can access the Internet from the 10.10 systems, can ping the other hosts on the network and can even use remote desktop sharing to access the 10.10 systems from different systems on the network. Obviously network connectivity works as the 110.10 systems get their IP addresses from the DHCP server on the network.

Other notes, the virtual 10.10 systems are running on VM Workstation 7.1.3 with the latest tools. The physicals 10.10 systems are running on white-box systems.

So the question is.... Is anyone able to access Windows shares from either Ubuntu or Kubuntu 10.10 system? Were any config changes needed after the base install?

    Hi,
I don't have Windows Shares, but I have external network hdd which works like Windows Share.
I can reach it from 10.10, both Ubuntu and Kubuntu. No issues here.

        Hi Oshunluvr,
Where are your CIFS shares? Workgroup, Domain, Server, or Win system. The weird thing is that I've tried it without success on several systems. Can't see what the problem is here.

        Thanks in advance,

Re: Can anyone access Windows Shares?

I have a Ubuntu 10.04 Server running NFS and Samba and sharing printers, scanner, media card reader, and fax. My Samba shares are available to all my windows computers and also to my Ubuntu 10.10 media computer. I don't run Samba on my power 10.04 desktop, but I have the shared directories mounted there via NFS.

When my wife's Vista laptop or my daughter's Win 7 laptop are on, the 10.10 media computer also picks up their shares.

There's a pretty good samba how to on this forum. Usually it's a workgroup and/or permissions issue that causes trouble.

          For what it's worth, here's my server's /etc/samba/smb.conf file:
          Code:

Re: Can anyone access Windows Shares?

when using windows 7 or vista, you have to change the default settings of the samba server to allow for non NTVMv2 machines to connect you can also use the alternate port of (445 iirc). we get this issue all the time when setting up machines and clients use a version of windows thats 2003 server +

Re: Can anyone access Windows Shares?

              sithlord48,
That may be my problem. My windows shares are on Server 2008, Win 7, Vista, and FreeNAS server.

Where do I need to change the default settings to allow non-NTVMv2? I'm assuming on the systems providing the shares. I seem to remember seeing a reg edit to allow samba1.

I'll do more experimenting later tonight. What still seems curious is that I don't see the FreeNAS shares as I believe that only uses SAMBA ver 1.

              Oshunluvr,
Did you need to make any changes to the smb.conf file. Other than changing my workgroup to match the local workgroup, my smb.conf is unchanged since install.

              Thanks,

              Cps22

Re: Can anyone access Windows Shares?

This seems to be a very common problem that doesn't have a clear resloution.
My experiences are exactly as this post in 10.04.
                    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3111728.0
Samba4 is available now too which, in theory, should work with Win 7 and Server 2008 but that wasn't my experience.
This is frustrating. Seem to be waisting all this time trying to get something to work that is an integral part of the OS.
