OK I'll take a look, but what puzzles me is that the size (1280x1024) and the horizontal and vertical sync rates for my monitor are correct when I look at the monitor's built-in menu and the splash screen shows at those correct settings as part of start up, also if I ctrl-alt-del when I have the black screen the logout etc window opens and shows in the centre of the black screen. The mouse shows up OK when KDE starts, it is simply that the screen is black. So there is the puzzle everything works except I cannot see the KDE desktop!
