All,
Am having some real problems with a new install of Kubuntu 10.10 64 bit - and would appreciate your help. This is my first 64bit install - although I've been using 32 bit versions of Linux for over four years now.
The install went fine, as did the updates - although the updates seem to have broken the very nice boot splash screen. I now have a text-based version of the Kubuntu boot splash. This is not a real problem though (unless it is a cause or symptom of my major problem).
The major problem is that my mouse and keyboard freeze up - constantly and without warning. And I am unable to do a lot about it. It happens randomly, and can vary in time from several seconds after boot (before even logging in on one occasion) to about 10 or 15 minutes of usage, although if I do not use the mouse and keyboard and let music play with Amarok, it will quite happily work along fine until I start using the mouse and keyboard again - at which point it will freeze up at some random time afterwards.
I have a wireless mouse and keyboard combo that are plugged into the PS/2 ports. The same happens though for wired USB mice and keyboards, which I've also tried.
Typically, what happens is this:
When using the mouse - moving it generally, not often when clicking something -the mouse will freeze. I will be unable to move the pointer at all. However, the keyboard is still usable for a short while afterwards. For example, I am able to navigate quickly through screens or programs using keyboard shortcuts. Then, a short time later (usually no more than a minute or two once the mouse has stopped) the keyboard stops working too.
Plugging in a USB mouse or keyboard in addition to the PS/2 ones then allows the USB versions to be used for a short while. I then need to reboot in order to get back functionality. Leaving the USB mouse and keyboard in for a while and continuing to use the PC will mean that within five minutes or so, the USB versions no longer work - and then I really am stuck. Unplugging keyboards and mice and plugging them back in results in no change. I am then stuck with a PC that has no access via mouse or keyboard. There does not seem to be any connection between the keyboard and the PC - so, for example, the magic sys-req key combos don't seem to work.
So effectively, what happens is that every time I get a freeze, I plug in a USB mouse and use it to reboot the machine. Unless I'm quick, and use the USB mouse to do a reboot via the GUI, the whole thing seizes up and it results in a need to do a hard reboot. This is not good for my ext4 filesystem... (and I get a lot of complaints from the system when rebooting!). Generally, I only need to do a hard reboot if the machine is doing something (like installing updates) and I am forced to wait longer than a couple of minutes for it to finish before I am able to reboot... by then, the USB mouse has frozen and I am no longer able to have any control.
Using the USB mouse to log out and trying again doesn't work. Even after logging out, the PS/2 mouse and keyboard no longer work. It seems that only a reboot will work. I presume at this point that killing X and restarting might work - although I'm not sure how to do that from a GUI with only a working mouse. Is that possible? How could I check?
I'm semi-competent with Linux, and am happy to bash away at the CLI, so please treat any responses as such. I just want to get this resolved. My shiny new 64bit install looks great, and I really want to play with it - but it just keeps freezing up on me. I've not been able to play any more than a couple of minutes at a time, so far.
One of the areas I'm not good at (and please feel free to point me in the right direction here) is in terms of knowing which logs to look in for errors and what to start looking for. I have a sneaking suspicion that all this is to do with the X server - but don't know where to look or what to look for. How can I check? And are the logs still there after reboot? - I don't have time to check them before rebooting because it's likely that I will be frozen out. Where can I find the relevant logs? And what details should I be looking for?
Any help you can give me would be most useful.
Many thanks in advance.
