[RESOLVED] Numerous Programms start after booting

I graded up to Maverick a few days ago.
Since then every time I start my system several programs start at the same time.
Especially Kontact, DigiKam and Krusader. Krusader sometimes starts up to 7 sessions at the same time. This is not a real serious problem, but a little bit annoying, since also the booting takes longer.
Also it does not give a good impression on my KDE-Desktop to my fellow gnome and Windows colleagues...
Anybody experiences the same and/or knows how to change it?

The funny thing is, it is not exactly replicable an my machine with every boot. Sometimes DigiKam and Kontact do not start. Krusader always starts, but with different numbers of sessions....

Thanks a lot for the help
    bye

Re: Numerous Programms start after booting

I think for Digikam there is a bug that causes it to not exit properly and leaves a process running into the background and may be a similar situation these other applications as well. I had 3+ instances of Digikam opening on me at login and it was very annoying.

In System Settings>Startup and Shutdown>Session Management the default setting for On Login is to 'Restore previous session' which will attempt to do what it says and reload all the applications as it was when you shutdon. With Digikam's process in the background it must think it was running and will relaunch it at login.

I stopped this from occurring by making sure all the processes for Digikam were shutdown by sending the kill command in the system monitor and changing the Session Management to 'Restore manually saved session'.

With manually saved session, a new entry will be in the Kmenu in the shutdown options to save the current session for next login. So it will always boot into the state that you manually saved the session.

So if Digikam, Kontact and Krusader are all properly closed and processes killed then saving the session should prevent them from coming back like that.

You might want to try 'Start with an empty session' or even adding the specific applications in the exluded list instead if it suits your needs better.

        Hello Slush1000,

thanks a lot for the answer! And sorry for not responding for such a long time...
Your solution helped: I first started an empty session, started all programs I wanted to run from the beginning (Yakuake, Amarok, Skype, Kopete) and then saved the session. Now I always start with this saved session and everything is fine.
        Thanks again

I also experienced the same problem on Maverik, though only with krusader. I solved it the same way as described above.
I was wondering why this happened when I found this thread.
Now, if the problem at boot is solved, the problem of programs not closing properly remains open!
Apart from waste of memory, there is an additional problem related to krusader.
If you opened an external disk (i.e. a USB HD or a memory stick) you will not be able to umount it because krusader is still using it, even if you (apparently) closed your file manager!
If you need to release your memory stick from your computer you have to issue a kill command to the still running (hidden) krusader.
This is really annoying and it is a bad bug!

Just unmount the connected device before you close your file manager.

This is only a turnaround, not a solution.
I searched kde bugs and it is already reported there as bug 240319

I have the same problem :-/

While waiting for a fix, a useful mitigation to the problem of having 6-7 instances of Krusader respawned on login is to configure Krusader to run in "single instance mode": this way there's only one copy :-)
