Installer crashs while configuring bootloader - help!!!

I have a frustrating problem with the Kubuntu 10.10 installer. It does everything but seems to fail at the last step. the Installer Crashs at 66% while configuring boot loader. All files have been copied but the disk is now corrupt and i cannot boot onto the system.

I am now left with a dead pC with no OS on it... having to download images via Work PC!

There are no defects on the HDD, the install cd (i have tried 3 burns of 3 different images!) the md5's pass.. memory has past tests etc...

    Any suggestions?

Are you using a Live CD? If so, try it with an Alternate CD (the installer is different).

Also, make a Parted Magic or GParted bootable CD, and use that to do the partitioning and formatting in advance. Then use the Kubuntu Alternate CD just to select the partition(s) (no need to format) and install the OS.
