Kubuntu 10.10 crashes / logs out every 2-10 min

Hi @ll,

I've updated from Kubuntu 10.04 which was working perfectly by the way to version 10.10 (with all available updates).

Now every 2-10 min I got logged out! This is very annoying because the session is not even saved :/

Is there anyone out there having the same problem or has already found a solution for this?

Just a guess...but maybe you burned a bad iso or just happened to get a bad install..i would double check the md5 sum of your download file of kubuntu 10.10 and also consider downloading another one, burning a new iso disc and re-installing...

I know in the past, doing ubuntu installs, i have had a few times when i would do an install and something major would be a problem, and then did a new download and a new disc, and the next install went perfect...

Perhaps others here with better technical knowledge could give you some troubleshooting tips...but just thought i throw out that suggestion

No, was a direct update without iso and the same problem on two different computers.

I got logged out!

A little more detail on exactly what you see might help. If it is just a loss of the GUI (a crash of the X server, followed by a new presentation of the login greeter), then there should be something in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log that would help explain it.

If it is actually a warm reboot of the computer, then we might start considering a thermal shutdown of the CPU, or something like that.

X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

by the way...sorry...i didn't realize you did an "upgrade" rather then fresh install...things can break in upgrades...fresh installs tend to not be subject to those types of problems...which is why i always do a fresh install even though it's more of a bother to set up things again...still, it beats sitting there trying to figure out why various things broke and what to do about them...

i think those that do upgrades and everything works 100% are usually just lucky....

But this time I thought it would be ok to upgrade.. it's version 10.10 and a working upgrade should be something very basic. I didn't want to reconfigure all the programs, settings and shares.

2x Xubuntu Upgrades from 10.04 to 10.10 worked perfectly.
2x Kubuntu Upgrades from 10.04 to 10.10 no chance to get it work.. it's very strange as it seems I'm the only one getting this problem.

May be I could provide more Logs to find the cause of this problem? It could be a X.org or a KDE problem..

I even disabled desktop effects.

Re more logs - could you put your log in a pastebin somewhere? That way it is only a click away whereas now one has to jump through a number of hoops to get to see it.

Does the X server crash on it's own (when you're not doing anything)...or when you click something (like restoring a minimized window)?

I have to click around.. otherwise it wont crash.

But its not a specific program.. even with firefox only it crashes.

I know - and you expect every one to save that file on their computer and then open it. This is not user friendly, takes too much time for those of us who help not only you but many others, too.

The easier you make it for those ready to help, the more likely it is that you get results.

It's ok for me if you don't want to download and open the file.. if your time to help is limited.

May be someone will it open anyway.. even if its not as userfriendly
