OK, after a very long night, the good news is that I have a working system, installed from a LiveCD with all the partitioning working fine. The bad news is that it was built from a Ubuntu 10.10 CD, not a Kubuntu version. So I now have a Gnome-based system, which is not bad, but not the KDE environment i know and love.
The advantage of this is that you already have Synaptic and Gnome network manager installed now, and you can use Gnome as a fallback, should anything bad happen to Kde.

To install Kde, open Synaptic (it's in the Gnome menu under "Administration") and install the package kde-full, which will install a full Kde. When it asks which login manager to use, select kdm.
